Smart starts

You could call it the original multi-tool. Not only did your sturdy car key start the car, it also served to open letters, tighten the odd loose screw and scratch off lottery tickets.

You might want to keep one of those old keys around for nostalgia's sake, or the occasional odd job around the house, especially if you buy a new car. Key and key fob technology has advanced in recent years. And creative engineers have come up with even more high-tech ways to integrate keys and key fobs into your car's operating system.

Even entry-level cars have remote lock and unlock features on key fobs. But that's just the beginning.

Luxury carmaker Aston Martin made it possible for its buyers to release their inner James Bond when they team the DBS with a timepiece from Jaeger-LeCoultre. The high-end Swiss watchmaker created the AMVOX2 Transponder watch, which is programmed to read and communicate with the Aston Martin DBS by controlling the locking mechanism from the watch face. (Base price for the DBS, around $270,000. The watch, available to DBS buyers only, is an additional $37,900.)

And there's even an app for your new car. In October, Directed Electronics announced the Viper SmartStart, which allows users to start their car remotely from an iPhone or iPod Touch. Users download the free application from the Apple Store, have the Viper SmartStart remote start program installed on their car (about $500) and then activate their account. The first year of service is included Advertisement in the installation price. After that, a subscription costs $29.99 a year.

The Jaguar XK Smart Key System allows the driver to activate locking and starting systems with a keyless fob. When the owner approaches and touches the car, antennas pick up a signal and validate the key's code and the doors unlock. Inside, still more antennas validate the fob's presence. When the driver touches the brake and presses a start/stop button, the car starts no key.

Remote start systems that allow drivers to start their cars with a key fob are showing up on a wider variety of models. Buyers of Ford's 2011 Ford Super Duty pickup will be able to choose a remote start system this spring. The feature eventually will be offered across the Ford, Lincoln and Mercury lineup.

Cadillac offers buyers three types of keys and fobs: a conventional key, a fob with a remote start and remote keyless entry and a more sophisticated, programmable fob that can store information on seating positions and thermostat temperature along with remote start features.

Making the key fob both visually appealing and functional is important, says David Caldwell, spokesman for Cadillac. When you look at the important consumer trends over the last 20 years, you see that often, the best-looking technology is the one that takes hold. The technology that is easiest to use and most fun to play with not confounding or intimidating is the technology consumers choose.

Mega-auction rides out the storm

Nika Rolczewski

Special to the Star

Scottsdale, ariz. – When Arizona Governor Jan Brewer declared a state of emergency on Jan. 21, it had nothing to do with the price of cars going across the auction block.

Record-breaking storms brought rain, wind and even snow to outlying areas. But the severe weather couldn't take the spirit out of the annual Southwestern car-collector love fest here, with five world-renowned auto auctions scheduled for a single week.

At all the auctions, many of the big-number cars struggled to get prices this year and auctioneers fought hard to squeeze that last bid.

But there were also many reasonably priced cars at all the major auctions. Whether you want to buy, sell or just admire, Scottsdale in January is a blessing for the car lover – and it takes more than Mother Nature to rain on its parade.

Here are some of this year's highlights.

Barrett-Jackson

Among car auctions, this one is by far the king of the hill. Barrett-Jackson opened the gates of its massive compound for an entire week starting Mon., Jan. 18, with more than 1,500 cars, trucks, planes and motorcycles guaranteed to find new owners, since no reserve prices were set.

In its 39th year of being an automotive Disney World, Barrett-Jackson estimates that more than 200,000 people annually scour the tents and explore the vendors selling everything from memorabilia and jewellery to elk hunting trips in the wilds of Colorado. Somewhere amidst the crowds and chaos is a car sale.

With non-stop prime-time television coverage, the top cars were bound to bring ridiculously high prices. Again this year, an airplane brought the highest bid: A 1929 Hamilton Metal Plane H47 sold for $671,000.

But that's just over half of last year's top bid for a 1929 Ford 4-AT-E Tri-motor airplane, which sold for $1,210,000. (Both prices include the 10 per cent buyer's premium.)

As for cars, a 1964 Shelby Cobra Roadster brought $478,500 while a 1963 model sold for $401,500.

For those watching, even stranger things happened.

A 1970 Oldsmobile 442 w30 convertible sold for $222,000 after buyer's premium while 45 minutes and nine cars later another 1970 Oldsmobile 442 w30 convertible hit the hammer at $159,500 – a difference of $62,500.

Gooding & Co.

A relative newcomer to the Scottsdale auction frenzy, Gooding & Co. is the one to watch for some of the rarest and most beautiful vehicles in the world. Tucked up against the Scottsdale Fashion Square, Gooding & Co. is as elegant and refined as the cars they sell.

During its sizzling two-day Scottsdale auction, the company made $33.9 million in sales, with a total of 114 out of 125 lots sold. And for the third year in a row, Gooding & Co. attracted the highest bid for anything at the Scottsdale auctions: a 1956 Jaguar D-Type Sports Racer that sold for $3.74 million.

The 1965 Shelby 427 s/c Cobra, the first of 29,427 s/c Cobras built, sold for a bargain price of just over $1 million, much less than its estimated value of $1.8 million. But no amount of prodding could get the crowd to open their wallets more.

A 1959 Ferrari 250 GT Series 1 Cabriolet squeaked by the seller's $2 million reserve price. The final bid was actually $1.95 million, plus the 10 per cent buyer's premium. But by discounting their own cut, Gooding & Co. had a satisfied consignor and a happy auction house with $145,000 still made on the sale.

RM Auctions

Canadian-owned RM Auctions, the world's largest collector-car auction house, posted more than $19.6 million in total sales with an impressive 89 per cent of lots sold.

RM was the only one of the auctions I attended to have a windproof venue – the luxurious Arizona Biltmore Resort and Spa, which attracted a standing-room-only crowd.

For the first time, the company's annual Arizona auction was extended to two days with the addition of an exclusive British-themed evening auction. A rare 1963 Aston Martin DB4 GT, the last GT to be built and sold by Aston Martin's Newport Pagnell Factory, sold for just over $1 million after 16 tense minutes on the block.

A remarkably restored 1965 Aston Martin DB5 garnered $429,000 and a matched pair of Aston Martin DB Mark IIIs, a Drop Head Coupe and a Saloon, fetched $330,000 and $275,000 respectively.

A 1967 Shelby 427 Cobra, formerly part of the renowned Otis Chandler Collection, sold for $632,500 while the front-of-the-catalogue 1964 Shelby 427 Cobra "Flip—Top" Roadster stalled at $1.45 million.

Russo and Steele

Russo and Steele were the top story of the auctions this year. The company had a great start to the sale, but on the evening of Jan. 21, the winds picked up and tore through two of the auction tents, with one of them landing on the adjacent freeway. Luckily no one was seriously hurt.

The auction was shut down for three days. Many cars were damaged, but many others were miraculously spared. The bidding resumed three days later and the event was extended a day, leaving many hustling to change their travel arrangements.

The 1960 Ferrari 250 GT Series II Cabriolet – the 14th built in the first run of 100, and a car that suffered not even a scratch – brought a respectable $797,500.

Editor’s Note: RacinToday has two reporters – Mike Harris and Jonathan Ingram, both veterans of the event – on site at the Rolex 24. They will periodically file updates, notes and features during the race and wrap the event up afterward.

Daytona Beach, Fla. – Notes from the 48th running of the Rolex 24 at Daytona International Speedway:

Actor Patrick Dempsey is no longer considered an oddity in the Grand-Am paddock.

The guy who stars in TV’s “Gray’s Anatomy” is now welcomed as a car owner and racer by the sports car crowd, which is just fine with Dempsey.

“Every year you race, you develop a lot more confidence,” Dempsey said after his first stint as co-drive of the No. 40 Dempsey Racing Mazda. “Sometimes you get a little swayed in your confidence, depending on how it goes in your stint. I feel a lot more confident and a lot more frustrated for not performing if I’m not going faster. But you have to really pace yourself and not be too hard.

“It’s fun,” he added. “At this point, we really want to win and we want to be in the top 10. That’s what you’re focused on. Anything else is really frustrating at this point.”

Late in the fifth your, Dempsey’s car was 23rd overall and ninth in the GT class.

DARIO A VOLUNTEER: A reporter for the Daytona Beach newspaper asked two-time IZOD IndyCar Series champion Dario Franchitti if he drives in the Rolex 24 because he wants to or because Chip Ganassi, who owns both his IndyCar and the Grand-Am car he drives, insists upon it?

That drew a good laugh from the packed media center, but Franchitti, who had just gotten out of the race-leading Ganassi BMW Riley Daytona Prototype after a two-hour stint, grinned and happily answered.

“You could say no, I guess,” Franchitti noted. “He asks if you want to do it and we all welcome coming here, so we say yes. I enjoy it.

“With Chip, taking away the 08 season in NASCAR, he’s given me equipment to win races every time I’ve driven one of those cars, the IndyCars and also Grand-Am,” the Scot continued. “So you want to get in one of those cars. Everybody wants to come and do this race and come in a car that you can compete with.

“Besides, I like Chip. He’s a good boss.”

Asked what he does between stints at the 24-hour event, Franchitti said, “It’s a Catch 22 situation because, on the one hand, I want to go watch the race because I’m a race fan and it’s exciting and I want to see what’s happening. On the other hand, you’ve got to distance yourself a bit and focus on your job.

“They just told me I have 6 1/2 hours off before I get back in the car, so I’ve got to eat, watch some Speed TV and sleep and get ready for another bout in the middle of the night.”

The car Franchitti is co-driving with IndyCar teammate Scott Dixon and Ganassi NASCAR drivers Juan Pablo Montoya and Jamie McMurray, had led most of the race through the fifth hour.

JIMMIE’S TURN: NASCAR star Jimmie Johnson was in the No. 99 GAINSCO Chevrolet Riley in the fourth hour of the grueling Rolex 24.

It’s the same car the four-time Sprint Cup champion crashed during practice on Thursday, forcing the team to change the entire rear end. Team spokesman Adam Saal said the work took until 4 a.m. Friday.

Alex Gurney, son of Dan Gurney, who won the inaugural sports car race here in 1962, drove the first 3 ½ hours in the 99 and said it felt “just like it did before (the accident).’’

“It was a major effort by our guys,’’ he added. “It’s like they’re doing two 24-hour stints in a row. ”

Before following Gurney into the car, Johnson looked relaxed and confident.

“Right now, we’re just trying to be smart,’’ he said. “I’ve already made my mistake.’’

Gurney started last among the 15 Daytona Prototypes, but racing cautiously on the slowly drying track, he had the car up to second before turning it over the Johnson.

“I was trying to be conservative,’’ Gurney said. “Some of these guys were acting like it isn’t a 24-hour race. But, any time it’s wet, it’s a big challenge, a mental game. You’re just trying to squeeze on more power and not spin.’’<

There were plenty of spins and collisions in the early going Saturday, with Scott Pruett, a three-time overall champion of the Rolex, bumped into the wet infield grass while trying to pass one of the slower GT entries. Pruett was able to continue and was running sixth with IndyCar driver Justin Wilson at the wheel in the fourth hour.

IF THE SHOE (LINER) FITS: Boris Said showed some ingenuity after determining that the floorboards of his Turner Motorsports BMW M6 were heating up all the drivers’ toes.

Said carved a pair of Styrofoam shoe liners out of a cooler before getting into the No. 94 for his first stint.

Shades of NASCAR’s Sterlin Marlin, who may have patented the idea years ago.

WET START: There is a long history of rain in the Rolex 24, but this is the first time in anyone’s memory that the event has begun with precipitation falling.

The race began under both a green and yellow flag with the field trailing a pace car through the puddles in the infield portion of the circuit. But the rain stopped shortly after the race began and the green flag waved for the start of lap 7.

Despite the heavy spray that limited sight, the first green-flag lap was a barn-burner, with some very gutsy moves. The wet start featured a terrific Daytona Prototype duel between Oswaldo Negri Jr. in a Ford Riley and Scott Pruett in one of Chip Ganassi’s BMW Riley’s.

Pole-winner Max Angelelli played it cool and slipped to seventh in the early going.

As team owner and co-driver Wayne Taylor said, “I told Max there’s still 23 hours and 40 minutes to go.”

FOYT’S FIRST: With the quieter-than-usual action, there was lots of time for stories about previous Daytona races in the rain.

There have been a lot of fun and interesting moments in the wet at the Rolex 24 during my 31 consecutive years covering the twice-around-the-clock sports car event, but none more compelling than A.J.Foyt’s first ride in a Porsche in 1983.

Foyt came to Daytona that year to co-drive a British-built Aston-Martin with NASCAR star Darrell Waltrip. When the engine on that entry quit five hours into the race, Foyt began to pack up his gear to head back for Houston, where his father, A.J. Foyt Sr., was dying.

But Preston Henn, owner of the pole-winning Porsche 935, found the four-time Indianapolis 500 winner before he left the track and asked if Foyt would like to join his team for the rest of the race. Foyt, whose last previous sports car race was the 1967 24 Hours of Le Mans, which he won with Dan Gurney, told Henn he had never driven a Porsche and wasn’t sure if it was a good idea.

The enterprising Henn took Foyt out to the hulk of a crashed and burned out 935, sat him down in it and had Foyt try shifting the gears a bit. At that point, Foyt agreed to help out Henn, who had already driven one stint as co-driver with Frenchmen Bob Wollek and Claude Ballot-Lena, both sports cars specialists.

Wollek, winner of numerous endurance events in Europe, had won the pole for the Daytona race. But the car fell 12 laps off the pace early in the race because of a pair of blown turbos. Steadily, Wollek and Ballot-Lena drove the powerful Porsche back to the front, retaking the lead early on Sunday morning.

The first time Foyt tried to get into the car, an irate Wollek slammed the door in his face and drove off for an extra stint. But Foyt finally got into the car on the next pit stop, about 30 minutes after rain began falling steadily on the track.

Standing in the team pit, it was easy to see Wollek was incensed as Foyt drove onto the road course. He tossed his helmet angrily to the ground and sat down on the pit wall with a thump.

“He doesn’t know the car, he doesn’t know the rain, he doesn’t know anything,’’ Wollek said. “We have worked very hard from 12 laps behind … to work back to only a lap in the lead with a chance to win. And now Mr. A.J. Foyt is driving the car. I’m very upset about it.’’

By the beginning of the ’80s, Foyt’s legendary career was beginning to fade. But the 48-year-old Foyt that got into the Swap Shop Porsche that night was the A.J. of old, a talented, aggressive driver with something to prove.

Not only did he extend the lead to almost two full laps on the 3.56-mile circuit, Foyt drove the fast lap of the race.

Wollek was mollified, shaking Foyt’s hand when he got out of the car. The team went on to win the race by eight laps and Foyt and Wollek became close friends.

And, even better, Foyt was able to take the winner’s trophy back to share with his father.

FAST MAN: Apparently, NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson is fast, no matter what he drives.

Johnson, driving the Rolex 24 for the GAINSCO team, spent some time on the iRacing.com simulator Friday night at the team party.

On his second lap “racing’’ around Daytona’s 3.56-mile road circuit, Johnson was quicker than his fastest lap on track.

“It usually takes people a lot longer than that to get used to the simulator,’’ said iRacing spokesman Kevin Bobbit.

PERSISTENT RACER: Davy Jones was considered an up and coming driver when his racing career was seemingly ended in a huge crash while testing an Indy car at Disney World Speedway in 1997.

It took Jones nearly two years to completely recover from his injuries, including a head trauma. But the winner of the 1990 Rolex 24, the 1996 Le Mans and the 1996 Indy 500 runner-up was back in a sports car in 1999 and has raced sporadically since.

Jones is racing this weekend with the Godstone Ranch Motorsports Team, making his first Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series start since the 2003 Rolex 24.

Why on earth is this man popular?

Ivor Davis

Special to the Star

Top Gear, Britain's offbeat car series, has been a must-see for TV watchers around the world. Not only has it proven to be durable and enormously popular, but it even appeals to viewers who aren't crazy about cars.

And it has turned the show's witty, irreverent, shoot-from-the-hip host Jeremy Clarkson (who does the show with co-presenters Richard Hammond and James May) into a giant celebrity. In each episode, the trio does extraordinary things to cars.

The other day Clarkson, 49, sat down for a rare interview to discuss why he thinks the series has become addictive in 150 million homes around the world.

Clarkson, whose column appears regularly in Wheels, lives in England's Cotswolds area with his wife of 16 years, Frances, and children, Emily, 15, Finlo, 14, and Katya, 11.

Sitting in the living room of his home with tongue firmly in cheek, Clarkson relished talking about his show whose 13th (and soon 14th) season is airing on BBC Canada.

Q: How have you been able to tap into such an passionate audience?

A: I have absolutely no idea because they fall into a number of different categories. You have those who just like to see three grown men falling over and catching fire every week, and then you have those who really want to know what the latest Ferrari is like. I've got one parked right outside my window just here, actually.

And then you have those for whom there is just nothing else to watch. I genuinely have tried to work it out and just can't, because we're ugly, we have yellow teeth and none of us can drive very well. We don't really know anything about cars. Well, James does, and he's very boring about it. It baffles me but I'm very happy it happened.

Q: Why do women also love your show?

A: It probably gives women an insight into the male mind. I mean, we really try hard not to be sexist. But that said, I think women have a more organized mind than men do. Mine's just a black hole.

Even though I have three children and a house to run and so on and a family, I still think, "I wonder if it would be possible to drive a car to the North Pole." And then we did.

And it's that sort of – and women – often my wife will turn to me on the sofa while we're watching and say, "Do you really think that?"

And yeah, we do. I really do wonder if it would be possible to put a car into space and if you can drive on the moon. And I'd love to try that.

Q: But that still doesn't explain why women seem to like the show?

A: I can't understand why a woman would sit down and watch Top Gear and say,"This is interesting." But we know from the figures, because I think half the audience or 48 per cent of the audience is women. And that's global. But not in Australia, incidentally. We do a show out there every year. That's 100 per cent male. The sheilas are all home with a bottle of sherry.

Q: So Aussie women ignore you?

A: Yes. Everywhere else it's half-and-half. And I wish I knew why. I don't understand why men watch it. I don't understand why I watch.

Q: Then what's the big attraction?

A: Well, hate mostly. It's usually hate that I get from people in the street. But there are Top Gear fans, and they tend to be aged around 9. When I construct the show I always write it with my children in mind because I think that really men may be 40 years old or 60 years old or 80 years old, but we really never really get past being 8.

And I think that has something to do with the appeal, because you have a show here that a little boy will like. His dad's going to like it, too. And then girls fancy Richard Hammond, and then the mother thinks, "Christ, they've got the whole family together here. This is fantastic."

So she'll join in as well, and then it becomes family entertainment. I mean, I know that there are some hardcore fans, particularly in America. We see what they write on websites. And even they hate us as well now, so yeah, it's pretty much hate.

Q: What's your dream car – the Bugatti or the Midget?

A: I've laughed at those cars for years. I just thought that they were driven by people who were a bit light in their loafers and people who have very dirty fingernails and people who enjoy it when a car goes wrong because they can get dirty fingernails making them work again.

So I've always been very suspicious of people who drive Midgets or MGs or, indeed, any old British sports cars. But anyway, I have bought that car because I liked it so much. But, you know, everybody always says, "Oh, no one can afford these cars." But you know Simon Cowell can. Elton John can.

Q: Do those cars fulfill your fantasies?

A: Oh, God, you've no idea. But a Bugatti Veyron is ... it's a bit like – how can I put it? – it's a bit like Concord really, that car, because it was a phenomenal engineering achievement to make a car that can go that fast, 250 miles an hour, on the road and keep on going that fast for maybe 10 years. And what depresses me slightly is that no car firm in the world right now is working on a car that can beat it.

And so in that respect, it is like Concord. You know, we achieved supersonic flight for ordinary – well, I don't want to say ordinary people, but for not people who are astronauts, and then backed off and said, "Well, we can't do that anymore." And that saddens me when the human race progresses and then takes a step back.

Q: How do you decide what car to experiment with or worry about not having a new car available for your show?

A: We're never worried about being first. We're only worried about doing something interesting with the cars. And it's very difficult trying to explain this to Ferrari all the time, who ring up and say, "We are able to offer you a one-hour interview with the managing director." And you think, "No. Well, really nobody's interested in us interviewing a businessman," because that's all he is. So we try to think of the story.

Q: Such as?

A: We found this amazing road in Romania, which will be the start of Season 14, in March. And then it was really, once you'd found the Transfagaran Pass in Transylvania, it was "Right. What cars would everybody want to drive on that road?" Because it is the most incredible road I've ever found anywhere in the world. And then it became, once you start to think about it, it's a new Ferrari, a new Lamborghini, and a new Aston Martin. And the car firms are normally very happy to oblige.

Q: What are the most memorable things you've done?

A: The most enjoyable was when we drove across Botswana in Africa. That is something that even film crews, who are notoriously difficult to please, still talk about today as being the most fun they've ever had.

Driving to the North Pole was the least fun I've ever had in a car for two weeks with James May and no knife to cut my wrists. And just gin and tonic to keep us going. That was very, very hard. It's minus 60 up there. And you know, there was the constant threat of the ice giving way and the car crashing through the ice, and then we would have been killed.

So that would have been annoying.

International GT Open season taking shape

Post a comment GT Open - Kessel Racing - Spa-Francorchamps - Marcel ten Caat

© Planetlemans - Marcel ten Caat

With all the announcements coming from the Le Mans Series, the American Le Mans Series and the various SRO championships one seems to forget that Europe has another major GT2/GT3 series, the International GT Open. And that series had quite some interesting updates as well.

After changes on the provisional calendar meant that the Imola and Portimão swapped places and the proposed Donington round was replaced with a weekend at Brands Hatch GT Sport announced two pre-season collective test sessions. On March 2-3 the teams will have the opportunity to test their cars on the Barcelona circuit, with the second two-day session taking place on March 25-26 at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Belgium.

GT Sport meanwhile expects enough cars to run separate Super GT (GT2) and GTS (GT3) races on Sunday at most race weekends. In recent weeks several British, French and German teams have shown their interest in competing in the International GT Open series, mostly due to the fact that little is known about the 2010 FIA GT2 European Championship.

One of the first new arrivals for the 2010 season is CRS Racing. Having announced a two-car entry for the Le Mans Series the British squad will also field two cars in GT Open. One Ferrari F430 GT2 will be entered for team owner Chris Niarchos (CAN) and Tim Mullen (GBR), while the second car will be driven by Klaas Hummel (NED) and Chris Goodwin (GBR).

2009 GTS champions, Philipp Peter (AUT) and Michal Broniszewski (POL) will move up into a Kessel Racing Ferrari F430 GT2. The Swiss team is also looking at running a second GT2 car in the championship, as well as its GT3 Ferrari 430s.

Another International GT Open regular is Villois Racing. The Italian team will return to the series to defend its GTS Team Championship with a pair of Aston Martin DBRS9 GT3 cars. Team owner Chicco Villois was unable to confirm any drivers for his cars yet, but did reveal that his team is also looking into the options of running an Aston Martin Vantage GT2. Talks with potential drivers and sponsors for all of his cars are still underway.

The most recent addition to the International GT Open field was British GT team RPM. It will enter its Ford GT for Alex Mortimer (GBR) and Peter Bamford (GBR). “I wanted to stage another full time campaign in Europe” said team owner Robin Mortimer, “and the GT Open is a perfect opportunity and I am sure we have a strong package”. With Alex Mortimer, who won the title in British GT and who won races in FIA GT3, Peter Bamford, a race winner in GT Open, and the Matech-built Ford GT he is right about having a strong package.

All the season dates:

2-3 March // Circuit de Catalunya, Montmelò (Spain) - Testing
25-26 March // Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps (Belgium) – Testing

16-18 April // Autódromo Internacional do Algrave, Portimão (Portugal)
30 April – 2 May // Nürburgring GP Circuit (Germany)
21-23 May // Autodromo Enzo & Dino Ferrari, Imola (Italy)

Special Alfa MiTo courtesy cars for Maserati owners

Courtesy cars are nice to have when you send in your car for dealer attention, but when you own an Italian exotic, not any courtesy car will do, as you still need to look stylish without your mega bucks ride. It’ll be perfect if your temporary car is also Italian, and also exotic.

Well, here is it. The Alfa Romeo MiTo is also Italian and also exotic, albeit on a different level. European Maserati owners will now get MiTo courtesy cars produced exclusively by Alfa Romeo for sister company Maserati. 100 units of these special purpose cars will be made, painted in Maserati Blu Oceano and with a limited edition plaque on the dashboard. The little car’s kick plates will also bear the words “Alfa Romeo for Maserati”.

Based on the range topping MiTo, it will be powered by a 1.4-litre MultiAir turbo engine with 170 bhp. Creature comforts include Pelle Frau leather and a radio navigator covering the whole of Europe. Maser’s MiTo will also get 18-inch alloys and Dynamic Suspension electronic shock absorber control system.

Designer casual wear when you’re not in the usual designer suit. Same concept as Aston Martin’s Cygnet, but this one is not for sale! More pictures after the jump!

DID YOU KNOW...

-The car barrel-roll stunt by the Aston Martin DBS used in the 2006 James Bond movie Casino Royale broke the world record for the most barrel rolls assisted by a cannon? Originally, the racing specifications of the DBS meant that a standard ramp would not be sufficient to get the car to roll, so the special effects team was called in to install an air-powered cannon behind the driver's seat. This allowed the car to complete seven full rolls. The stunt was officially entered into the Guinness Book of World Records on Nov. 5, 2006.

In one afternoon of filming this stunt, three DBSs were destroyed. Each is worth about $300,000. Ouch.

-In 2004, a team from the University of Waterloo captured the Guinness world record for Longest Journey by a Solar Powered Car. The team departed Waterloo, Ont. on Aug. 7, 2004 and drove 15,070 kilometres through Canada and the United States, finishing the journey on Sept. 15 in front of Parliament Hill in Ottawa.

The three-wheeled vehicle, dubbed Midnight Sun VII, can reach a maximum speed of 130 kilometres an hour, weighs 190 kilograms and stands 1.1 metres tall, five metres long and 1.8 m wide. Midnight Sun VII was built using carbon fibre, Kevlar and Nomex honeycomb. It is powered by a lithium ion battery and employs regenerative braking.

-Mercedes-Benz's three-pointed star was meant to symbolize the company's ambition of universal motorization: on land, in the water and in the air. The star was registered as a trademark in June 1909. It wasn't until 1916 when the star was surrounded by a circle, but it also had many other variations. The logo as we know it today became a registered trademark in August 1923.

-Production of the Porsche 911 first started in 1964. It sold for US$5,500, which is about US$38,300 in today's money. It was powered by a 2.0-litre, 130-horsepower six-cylinder engine. A targa model was added to the lineup in 1966. Porsche debuted the first ever 911 Turbo supercar in North America in 1975 as a 1976 model. A 911 Cabriolet was added to the lineup in 1983. Today, an entry-level 911 Carrera is still powered by a six-cylinder; however, displacement has been bumped to 3.6L and it produces 345 hp, which means horsepower is up about 62% from its humble beginnings. The price today starts at $96,700.

-The Chevrolet Corvette was designed by Harley Earl, who is also credited with designing General Motors' first ever concept car, the Buick Y-Job, and with introducing tail fins to the automotive world.

-On June 30, 1953, the first Corvette rolled off the assembly line in Flint, Mich. The first five Corvettes ever made are missing a rear-view mirror. Corvette pricing started at US$3,498, which is about US$28,290 in today's money. In 1953, the only options available were a heater and an AM radio. Legend says sales of the first Corvettes were so bad that several of them were given to movie stars to increase the car's public profile.

-The original Corvette logo featured a checkered flag crossed with an American flag, but the American flag was changed to a red one with a Chevy logo and a fleur-de-lis because it is illegal to use an American flag on a product trademark.

-The word corvette is French for a small warship designed for convoy escort duty.

The ride improves at the top end of the auto market

nside the Houston Auto Show, local corporate banker Michael Tribolet was in the driver's seat of a BMW 335i.

“This is a fabulous car,” said Tribolet, who has owned numerous luxury cars.

Currently he drives a Porsche 911 that he bought slightly used last July. He chose one in slate gray, he said, because it was the same color as the Porsche he traded in. Given the economy, he explained, he didn't want people to know that he purchased an expensive car.

Many high-end car buyers understand his sentiments, according to an auto analyst. Well-to-do consumers did not feel comfortable buying high-priced cars during a recession, said Jesse Toprak, vice president of industry trends at TrueCar.com, a new-car-pricing Web site.

“Over the past year there was a major sales decline for higher-priced luxury cars, and not only because of the downturn,” he said. Even if a person did have the funds to buy a high-end car, it “just didn't feel right,” knowing so many people were hurting, he said.

In the last couple of months, however, their attitude has shifted, he believes: “In fact, we are seeing the higher-priced luxury cars outperforming the rest of the market.”

Guilt factor

With the economy improving, wealthy consumers don't feel as guilty, he said. If the guilt factor in buying a high-end luxury car was a 10 in the fall, it is now a 7, he said.

There is a strong correlation between the Dow Jones industrial average and luxury vehicle sales, Toprak said, adding that the stock market “sets the mood.”

For January, sales at Mercedes-Benz are projected to climb 32 percent year over year, with Lexus up 30 percent and BMW up 13 percent, Toprak said. In comparison, the overall auto market is projected to go up 11 percent for January.

He expects “higher-priced luxury” and “super-luxury” cars to continue to outperform the industry.

Toprak defines higher-priced luxury cars as those costing $55,000 to $90,000 and super luxury as those selling for more than $90,000.

Among the luxury and super luxury vehicles at the Houston Auto Show, which runs through Sunday at Reliant Center, are Acura, Aston Martin, Audi, BMW, Cadillac, Infiniti, Jaguar, Land Rover, Lotus, Lexus, Lincoln and Mercedes-Benz. Many visitors were posing for pictures with them.

Luxury models having their Texas debut at the show include the Audi A8 and the Jaguar XJ.

“There is pent-up demand for luxury cars,” said David Cutting, senior manager of North America forecasting at J.D. Power and Associates. The recovery in the luxury car market will be gradual, he said.

Currently, luxury cars make up 6 percent of the market, and by year's end it will be 8 percent, he said.

Among luxury cars, Audi, BMW and Mercedes are showing the most growth, Cutting said.

Audi has done “extremely well” in recent years, gaining ground on BMW and Mercedes-Benz, according to Karl Brauer, editor in chief of Edmunds.com.

Important to Group 1

Noting that U.S. sales of Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Lexus were up in December, year over year, Pete DeLongchamps, vice president of manufacturer relations and public affairs at Houston-based Group 1 Automotive, said that luxury brands “are an important part of our business, and we remain positive about our investment” in them.

Group 1 owns 11 BMW dealerships in the U.S., including two in the Houston area, as well as six Mercedes dealerships; four Lexus, including two in the Houston area; one Audi; one Infiniti; and one Porsche dealership.

Group 1 also owns a Maybach dealership in Beverly Hills. A super premium car, the Maybach starts at $358,000 and moseys on up to $1,380,000.

At Porsche Cars of North America, there is “guarded optimism that the worst is behind us, but it's still a tough market out there,” said Tony Fouladpour, business communications manager for Porsche Cars of North America.

In 2009, Porsche sales dropped 24 percent, he said.

Houstonian Jack Hunt was at the auto show eyeing the new Jaguars, while confessing he was a loyal “Lincoln guy.” He drives a Lincoln MKX and said his wife drives a Lincoln Navigator. A commercial laundry equipment salesman, Hunt drives a lot and wants to make a good impression on clients, he said.

He comes in contact with wealthy people, many of whom drive luxury cars, Hunt said, noting: “They like to show their success in the car they drive.”

Expanded portfolios?

Sales of the extremely expensive exotic cars such as the Ferrari and Aston Martin all fell dramatically last year, Toprak said. He predicts that some makers of exotic cars will expand their portfolios by introducing less expensive models.

For example, he speculated, a “little brother” Ferrari could cost $100,000 instead of $200,000 or $300,000.

British sports cars take a lead in collector auction

PHOENIX, Ariz. -- People may joke about classic British sports cars, how they leaked oil and other fluids, how their electrical systems seemed to be haunted, but there was some very serious money paid for a variety of classic British sports cars at RM Auctions' 11th annual "Automobiles of Arizona" event here at the Biltmore Resorts & Spa.

For the first time, RM had so many vehicles consigned by collector car owners that its auction stretched over two days. The first day was an all-British affair termed, "The British Are Coming." So were the dollars.

A 1963 Aston Martin DB4 GT sold for an auction-leading $1,001,900. Also on opening day, a 1963 Aston Martin DB5 brought $429,000, a 1958 Aston Martin DB Mark III drop head coupe went for $330,000, a 1966 Aston Martin DB6 Vantage for $319,000, a 1962 Aston Martin DB4 racecar and a 1958 DB Mark III each brought $275,000 and a 1959 AC Ace Bristol roadster went for $253,000.

The lineup for the British-only day also included Austins-Healeys, Bentleys, Jaguars, MGs, a couple of Rolls-Royces and Triumphs, among others.

Several British cars also were offered during the second day of the event, with a 1933 Rolls-Royce P11 Continental three-position drophead coupe with Gurney-Nutting bodywork selling for $528,000.

The high sale of the day was $632,500 for a 1967 Shelby 427 Cobra. A 1932 Duesenberg Model J Tourster brought $550,000 and a 1930 Duesenberg Model J Arlington five-passenger club sedan went for $506,000.

In 1941, Chrysler had Briggs Manufacturing produce five examples of the Thunderbolt concept car, which was designed by Alex Tremulis and Ralph Roberts of LeBaron, a Briggs subsidiary. Each car had a different color combination. Four remain in existence, including this green and copper-colored car that was bid to $1.175 million at the RM auction, where the car didn't sell because the consignor's reserve price was not reached.

Two cars drew bids even higher than the $1,001,900 that bought the '63 Aston Martin the previous day, but neither car sold because of the vehicles owners' "reserve," a price that must be exceeded in bidding (or released by the consignor during the bidding) before the car will is eligible for sale. Such reserve prices are kept secret from bidders until they are exceeded or until the bidding stops and no sale is declared.

That was the case with the 1964 Shelby 427 Cobra "Flip-top" roadster and the 1941 Chrysler Thunderbolt concept car. The Cobra drew a bid of $1.45 million and the stunning green-and-copper colored Chrysler was bid to $1.175 million.

The Chrysler was one of several concept cars crossing the block. The 1954 Mercury XM-800 sold for $429,000, the 1956 Cadillac "Maharani Special" brought $225,000 and the 1958 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz "Raindrop" went for $220,000.

In all, 150 of the 168 consignments sold, and for more than $19.6 million.

"The addition of 'The British Are coming' event set the stage for a truly memorable two-day event with a strong overall performance," said RM president Ian Kelleher. "As our first auction of 2010, it was very encouraging to see such solid results. The response to this sale, as illustrated in the impressive sell-through rate, is a great reflection on the continuing strength of the market and provides a positive outlook for the year ahead."

RM's next auction is in March in conjunction with the concours d'elegance at Amelia Island, Florida. RM annually stages two sales in Michigan. The first is at Novi April 24-25 and the other is held alongside the Meadow Brook concours on July 24 at Rochester.

The 1955 Astra coupe crosses the block during the RM auction in the Biltmore Resort & Spa in Phoenix.

Bell: JMW ready for new challenge

JMW Motorsport gets set for a new challenge in 2010 with switch to Aston Martin for Le Mans Series campaign Rob Bell says he is excited by the new challenge facing JMW Motorsport for the 2010 Le Mans Series season.Having finished second in the GT2 category last season with a Ferrari 430, the team will switch to the Aston Martin Vantage for 2010 after revealing prior to Christmas that it had concluded a deal to become Aston Martin Racing's official global GT2 development partner. It will see Jim McWhirter's team tasked with both racing and developing the GT2 car during the season ahead and Bell – who will again spearhead the team's driver line-up – admitted it was a interesting challenge.“The Aston Martin is a car that has been around for a few years, but for various reasons, they are only now getting to the stage where they [Aston Martin Racing] can develop the car as they want to,” he said. “Maybe they now see this as the premier project as in previous years they have had the GT1 car and then the LMP1 project, so now they can push the GT2 machine. It's a good time to be involved and JMW will be running the car with full backing again from Dunlop – as they have in previous years.“The difference for us this season is that we will be the ones testing new parts all the time, which can be a double-edged sword. You get the parts straight away so you could be quick, but at some point, there will be something that fails as you are always pushing the envelope. It's how we manage that mentally and we have to be ready for it.”Bell admitted that the team was keeping expectations in check as it embarks on the new project, but said he was confident that JMW will have the Aston Martin in a winning position as the year goes on.“To start with, we have to bear in mind that we aren't the only ones making strides forward,” he said. “I know that Porsche, Ferrari, BMW and Spyker are doing the same amount of work as us so we need to be realistic. “We have to make sure the car works on the Dunlop tyre and move that partnership forwards and then by the middle of the season and end of the season we'd hope to be near the front and winning races to build momentum we can carry over to 2011.”

The gorgeous Aston Martin DB4 GT is the last GT model to be built and sold by Aston Martins Newport Pagnell factory, and is one of only six GTs known to have full factory lightweight construction details.

The DB4 GT comes with a 3.7-litre straight-six engine developing 302bhp up from the standard cars 240bhp making it one of the fastest cars in the UK in its day.

The modified DB4 will complete the 0-62mph sprint in just 6.1 seconds 0.2s off the pace of a 2009 Ford Focus RS and will top out at 153mph.

Auction Action Torrential Despite Arizona Rains

PHOENIX — Despite shockingly un-desertlike rains, auction houses holding their traditional winter events in the Phoenix area mainly had great success over the weekend. RM Auctions recorded $19.6 million in sales over two days, selling 89 percent of its stock. Gooding & Co. sold 49 of its 52 lots and recorded a $3.74 million sale of a 1956 Jaguar D-Type sports-racing car.

The news was not as good for Russo and Steele. The firm's 10th annual auction was postponed to Sunday and Monday after torrential rains caused two massive tents to collapse — and one to blow out onto the highway, closing it to traffic. There was damage to some vehicles but no serious injuries, Arizona's Republic newspaper reported.

Gooding's auction was most notable for the D-Type sale, but a 1934 Duesenberg Model J Disappearing-Top Convertible Coupe was sold for $1.815 million and a 1959 Costin Lister Jaguar sports-racing car broke a record, selling for $1.1 million. Other interesting cars to cross the block were a 1927 Bentley 6.5-liter sport coupe, selling for $726,000, and a 1948 Cadillac Series 62 Custom Cabriolet, which sold for $649,000.

At RM Auctions in Phoenix this weekend, there was a British theme. A 1963 Aston Martin DB4 GT, the last one to be built and sold from Newport Pagnell, sold for $1,001,000. A 1965 Aston Martin DB5 sold for $429,000, while a matched pair of DB Mark IIIs sold together, with the drophead coupe going for $330,000 and the sedan going for $275,000.

Other sales of interest included a 1967 Shelby 427 Cobra that had been in the Otis Chandler Collection, which sold for $632,500, and a 1932 Duesenberg Model J Tourster for $550,000. Two Detroit concepts from the '50s were sold at the RM event — a 1954 Mercury XM-800 Dream Car at $429,000 and a 1956 Cadillac "Maharani Special" Motorama Showcar at $225,500.

Of all the sequels they could have chosen, WHY CARS??!

I. Want. INCREDIBLES 2!!!!!!!!!!!

3

Completely agree #1, Cars is the worst pixar film, why choose that for a sequel. I dont want pixar to start pumping out sequels like dreamworks, keep the ideas fresh like WALLE.

Franzen93 on Jan 25, 2010

4

I'm with 1 and 3, I'd rather see a "A Bugs Life" sequel than Cars 2. Pixar only has two new films underway "Newt" from Brenda Chapman and "The Bear and the Bow" from Gary Rydstorm, along with Monster's Inc 2 and Toy Story 3, they should focus on those not Cars 2!

Xerxex on Jan 25, 2010

5

I really hope Pixar doesn't just start pumping out sequel after sequel. Not to mention I thought Cars was one of the weaker movies.

germs on Jan 25, 2010

6

Why make a Cars sequel? Because of all the movies Pixar ever made, Cars was the most financially successful when you take into account merchandising. Not to mention, although it was probably the least popular among adults, it was hands down the most popular movie Pixar made with kids 8 and under, aside from Toy Story that is. My job has me working inside 5 or 6 customer houses a day, and guaranteed if there's a kid in that age range, there's 10 times more Cars merchandise than anything else. And these kids are absolutely obsessed with it. Just cause it's not a popular choice for sequel among adults like us doesn't mean it's not a brilliant decision to make a sequel.

Colca on Jan 25, 2010

7

I agree with the others here… Cars is easily my least favorite Pixar movie. I know it is still popular with the kiddies, but the movie was pretty weak and really does not need a sequel. The one Pixar movie that SCREAMED sequel was The Incredibles… where is my Incredibles sequel??!!

Kevin on Jan 25, 2010

8

#6 got it right. You still see ass loads of Cars merchandise on the shelves EVERYWHERE, and believe it or not it's still selling. Cars was a merchandise peddling juggernaut that wipes out every other Pixar film in terms of sales.

They're simply cashing in and hoping that a more international version of Cars will get parents of other countries shelling out the same cash American parents are doing here for their kids.

The film is supposed to hop to locations around the world, I like the pick to use Japan as one of the locations.

Love it or hate it, Cars is hugely successful and that's what drives sequels. It makes total sense if you actually applied thought into it. If masterpieces of film were the only movies to get sequels we wouldn't have had Transformers 2… and soon Transformers 3.

Chris H. on Jan 25, 2010

9

My four year old nephew can't wait for this film, and the new Cars Land. I'm sure we will all be buying him more cars merchandise when the movie comes out.

I like to think that Pixar can do no wrong, but I really wish they weren't doing this.

Cable TV drives classic car frenzy

Cathy Luebke/Phoenix Business Journal

Left to right: Don Williams, Donald Osborne and McKeel Hagerty

RM Auctions photo by Steve Petrovich

This Aston Martin DB4 sold for more than $1 million at RM Auctions' The British are Coming night.

Pebble Beach and Monterey, Calif., may rule when it comes to concours car classics and vintage racing, but the Phoenix area is king of the auto auctions.

The region owes much of that status to Barrett-Jackson Auction Co., which just wrapped up its 39th annual classic car auction in Scottsdale despite heavy rain and wind that disrupted Russo and Steele’s Thursday and Friday sales.

But this one-time hobby has boomed into big-time business with a little help from six other January auctions and a surge of cable TV coverage.

It’s not just Speed Channel with its live and often-replayed coverage of Barrett-Jackson, but Discovery, History channels and others, says McKeel Haggerty of Haggerty Insurance, which gets much of its revenue from insuring classic cars.

Still, he said, “it’s a hobby at its core.”

“Television has been one of the greatest promotions tools to get people to collect cars,” agrees Don Williams, owner of the Blackhawk Collection dealership and museum in California. But, he adds, “You have to have it in your blood.”

Michael Leone is one example. Struck with Mustang fever years ago washing a green 1969 GT Fastback when he worked at a used car lot, he designed the Iacocca Silver 45th Anniversary Mustang with the Lee Iacocca, credited as father of the famed pony car. “It’s raining like cats and dogs out here,” he said excitedly heading off to Barrett-Jackson to talk up the limited edition car.

That passion for Mustangs also shows how the market has changed from pre-war cars to muscle machines and rustomods.

Most collectors fall into the 40 to 60-year-old class, says Williams. “But a 50-year-old today doesn’t want to collect the same cars as a 50-year-old in 1968.”

That generational drift also was evident walking into the elite RM Auctions The British are Coming night at the Arizona Biltmore. Think British Invasion chartbusters by the likes of Yardbirds and Freddy and the Dreamers preceding Thursday night’s action. Click here for a story and slide show on the RM event.

Haggerty says there also is a trend among buyers for small collections, rather that the expansive collections of the past.

Regardless of age people are always interested in prices, and Donald Osborne of Sports Car Market and Automotive Valuation Services says they want to see records. Barrett-Jackson prices can be somewhat of an anomaly, he says.

Auctions account only for about 10 to 15 percent of the market.

Just because one of the world’s best cars can go for $28 million, doesn’t mean you can’t buy an affordable Mustang convertible, Williams says.

The recession primarily impacted low and mid-market cars, according to the experts. Haggerty says his company’s revenue from insuring classic car buyers fell from $1 billion in 2008 to $500,000 last year.

But regardless of buying cycles, rain and recession, Arizona is in the spotlight with January’s auction frenzy, according to the experts who spoke at a meeting of the Phoenix Automotive Press Association last week. No need for fancy coucours shows or vintage racing.

“Arizona has so much already,” Williams says. And it’s seen by “everybody all over the world in many different languages.”

The area has much to offer outside the auctions, from winter golf to wide-open spaces, Haggerty says. Many people have come for the auctions and now have homes here, he says.

UK luxury car brand opens up huge store

Luxury carmaker Aston Martin launched its flagship store in Beijing yesterday evening in a push to increase its presence in the premier Asian market.

The store, located at 66 Jinbao Street, Chaoyang District, is more than twice as big as Beijing's other two Aston Martin stores and is the largest in Asia Pacific. The 500 sq m showroom will display seven of the luxury vehicles each costing roughly 1.3 million yuan.

"(Beijing) is a representation of the history of China, of the life in China, and this is why we are here," CEO of Aston Martin, Ulrich Bez told METRO yesterday.

Despite the economic recession's impact on luxury good sales, Bez said Aston Martin continues to expand worldwide and the Asia market is one of the fastest growing.

"Whatever the situation is in the economy if you have a great product, you will be successful and if you have a bad product you will suffer," he said.

The decision to open the new store was heavily influenced by the upcoming Spring Festival celebrations, said Matthew Bennett, regional director for Aston Martin Asia-Pacific.

Some markets come alive at different times of the year. This time of year is when Beijing is at its most lively, said Bennett.

Soon Beijing will be one of the largest markets and they wanted to be well represented here, he said.

"Not to be represented in the main capital of the premier Asian market, which is going to become the premier world market, would be a mistake," Bennett said.

In addition to the launch of the store, the company unveiled its latest model, Rapide, to the Asian market. A few deposits on the new vehicle were made at the event yesterday, Bennett said.

More than 80 Aston Martin vehicles were sold in China last year, he said, 50 percent of which were sold in Beijing stores.

"(Beijing) has a growing appreciation for luxury goods and an authenticity of a product, that's what we've been seeing," Bennet said.

"This is the place to be."

Preview: Check out what's new in 2010.

Here are some of the newcomers that will draw buyers to showrooms in 2010.

Chinese cars will bring incredible new value to Australian showrooms this year. The first arrivals from Geely promise a starting sticker well below $15,000 and will be followed by similar bargain-basement buys from Great Wall Motors.

But a counter-action by Japan has already begun, as Suzuki slashes prices to undercut the newcomers with a $12,490 driveaway deal on its Alto GL and a $12,990 driveaway tag for the Alto GLX with six airbags, anti-skid brakes and stability control.

The Chinese cars headline a year when more than 100 new models are expected in Australia, from a major update of the Holden Commodore through to super-luxury newcomers from Aston Martin, Jaguar and Rolls-Royce.

The Corolla-sized 1.5-litre Geely MK sedan and hatch will be priced from $13,000. Initially 1000 cars will arrive, distributed by the John Hughes Group in Perth.

Here’s a sample of what’s around the corner.

AUDI

AFTER a stellar 2009 for Audi, it continues with the A5 Sportback due next month, S5 Sportback in July, A8 in the second half and R8 Spyder about October.

ALFA ROMEO

THE new Giulietta arrives in November. There are two petrol engines (a 90kW 1.4-litre turbo-petrol and an upgraded MultiAir version at 127kW) and two diesel engines (78kW 1.6-litre and a 127kW 2.0-litre). Expect Volkswagen Golf pricing.

BMW

WE’VE seen them overseas and now they will arrive locally. First the 5 Series Grand Turismo arrives in March, and the X1 soft-roader in the second quarter. Perhaps the most eagerly awaited is the new 5 Series sedan, about June, to be followed by the wagon about October.

DODGE

THE Caliber hatch gets a modest refresh about June.

FIAT

THE baby Fiat 500 gets its electric two-stage convertible roof this month. Heavily based on the hardtop version, the Fiat 500C gets a 74kW 1.4-litre petrol engine that has a claimed fuel figure of 6.3 litres/100km. Prices start at $28,990. The fabric roof can be partially open at up to 60km/h.

FORD

FORD’S not saying but the Kuga (pronounced cougar) is big on its radar. Acclaimed as one of the best SUVs in its class, the Kuga could replace the ageing Escape. The VW Tiguan rival gets a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel, but may later add the 2.5-litre turbo-petrol five-cylinder engine also seen in the Focus ST. The all-wheel drive is expected to be joined by a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel Mondeo wagon.

HOLDEN

HOLDEN already builds an E85 Commodore for Brazil. Now it’s Australia’s turn. The ethanol-compatible engines are a first for an Australian carmaker and operate on anything from E10 (10 per cent ethanol, 90 per cent petrol) to E85 (85 per cent ethanol).

HONDA

HONDA’S Insight hybrid arrives about July with a budget sub-$30,000 price and the ability to sip only 4.4 litres/100km. The five-door Insight joins the Civic Hybrid and CR-Z hybrid coupe. The Insight uses a 1.3-litre petrol engine and electric drivetrain. The Civic and CRV get modest updates in March.

HYUNDAI

THE ix35 offroader is here in March to replace the Tucson and the mini i20 hatch arrives about June. The all-new mid-size sedan, codenamed the YF, should be here in June to replace the Sonata.

JAGUAR

THE eagerly awaited XJ hits showrooms in May but the XK and XKR are due to be upgraded this month.

LOTUS

THE company’s breakthrough mid-engined sportscar, the Evora, arrives this month. The 3.5-litre V6 is roomy, fast and safe and aimed squarely at the Porsche Cayman. The Evora 2+0 will cost $149,990 and the 2+2 $156,990.

MITSUBISHI

THE iMIEV electric hatch could beat Nissan to become Australia’s first full-electric production car. Based on the "i" mini-car, it has a large-capacity lithium-ion drive battery under the floor and the 47kW power unit under the luggage compartment. It has a single-charge range of 160km. Expect it about October in very small numbers, and with little change from $60,000. The mini-Outlander, called the RVR, arrives about July, with a new name.

NISSAN

THE 370Z Roadster arrives in March and the Dualis facelift mid-year.

PEUGEOT

The RCZ is Peugeot’s answer to the Audi TT and arrives in July. The 2+2 coupe – which may come as a convertible later – is based on the 308. Despite being smaller than the TT, it has a bigger cargo area because it foregoes all-wheel drive. Engines include the GTI’s 147kW turbo 1.6-litre shared with the Mini Cooper JCW. Expect the 3008 in May.

PORSCHE

THE GT3 is here this month, to be followed by the 911 Turbo Coupe and cabrio from mid-February. The GT3 RS should be here in May, but the big news is the all-new Cayenne off-roader, which arrives mid-year.

ROLLS-ROYCE

THE cheapest Rolls-Royce, the Ghost, arrives in June with a $695,000 price. But you’ll have to be quick with only 40 expected this year and most are sold.

SUBARU

IN JUNE the trusty Forester gets the same 2.0-litre turbo-diesel as the Outback. The engine is a "boxer" flat four-cylinder pumping out 110kW/350Nm delivering sub-7.0 litre/100km fuel consumption.

SUZUKI

THE Kizashi is Suzuki’s first big car. The Camry-sized sedan will be the company flagship when it arrives in May. It will be powered by a 2.4-litre four driving the front wheels, but a V6 all-wheel drive model and a hybrid may come later. The SX4 gets a facelift in February.

TOYOTA

THE big news for Toyota is the Camry hybrid. The Australian-built hybrid goes on sale next month. The 2.4-litre petrol engine and electric motor combine for 140kW yet produce less than 150g/km of CO2. Toyota claims it uses at least 35 per cent less fuel than its Australian-made six-cylinder competitors.

VOLVO

THE S60 is back and adopts most of the styling features shown in the concept version that debuted at the Detroit Motor Show. Australia gets a range of petrol and diesel engines which may include the European-spec 1.6-litre direct-injection turbo-petrol.

VOLKSWAGEN

CARSGUIDE’S car of the year, the Golf hatch, is joined by the wagon in February and the new T5 commercials and Caravelle in March. The Polo hatch arrives in April with the GTI in October. Performance buyers look out for the Golf R in June. The Amarok four-door ute reaches showrooms about September.

UK luxury car brand opens up huge store

Luxury carmaker Aston Martin launched its flagship store in Beijing Sunday evening in a push to increase its presence in the premier Asian market.

"(Beijing) is a representation of the history of China, of the life in China, and this is why we are here," CEO of Aston Martin, Ulrich Bez told METRO Sunday.

Despite the economic recession's impact on luxury good sales, Bez said Aston Martin continues to expand worldwide and the Asia market is one of the fastest growing.

"Whatever the situation is in the economy if you have a great product, you will be successful and if you have a bad product you will suffer," he said.

UK luxury car brand opens up huge store

A few deposits on the new vehicle were made at the event Sunday, Bennett said.

Russo and Steele car auction estimates $1.5M in damage

Russo and Steele officials assessed damage Friday after an 800-foot-long auction tent blew onto the Loop 101, snarling traffic and leaving hundreds of valuable collector cars uncovered in a pounding rainstorm.

Heavy tent poles struck some cars and uncovered convertibles were pelted with rain in the ongoing storm that has blasted through the state this week. A collector-car insurance executive estimated damages to the vehicles could exceed $1.5 million.

See photos of the damage

Russo and Steele announced late Friday morning that owners would not be allowed to inspect their cars until at least Saturday morning because the Scottsdale fire marshal has not declared the auction site safe.

Drew and Josephine Alcazar, Russo and Steele owners, hoped to resume the auction Saturday, but there was still a lot of cleanup to do.

"By no stretch of the imagination are we down for the count," Drew Alcazar said Friday as tent crews worked to clear away the damaged tents.

Public safety officials cleared out people from Russo and Steele's two display tents late Thursday when the high winds threatened the structures, and the auction continued in the main tent, Josephine Alcazar said.

High winds lifted the north tent high off the ground about 6:15 p.m. and it crashed down on the freeway east of Scottsdale Road, she said.

Russo and Steele shut down the auction and cleared the site. The south tent then blew over, but did not go onto the roadway.

Chuck Favour, Hagerty Insurance vice president of claims, said his company has insured about 125 of the cars at Russo and Steele.

After viewing the auction site from the Loop 101, he estimated that as many as half the 600 cars on the lot were damaged with dents and scratches from tent poles and debris.

Among the cars that were stranded on the site Friday was a 1948 Tucker convertible that could draw bids of more than $1 million.

A 1913 White Gentleman's Roadster was struck by a pole and an uncovered 1916 Ford Model T Fire Chief car sat out in the rain after a flimsy tarp blew off of it.

Favour expected the claims would average about $5,000 per car.

That works out to claims approaching $1.5 million.

He said he would be surprised if Russo and Steele was able to resume the auction.

Favour said a previous auction in Carlisle, Pa., sustained damage when a much smaller tent collapsed a few years ago.

Other Valley auctions continued on Friday. Barrett-Jackson had to move everyone into its main auction tent as a precaution Thursday night, but otherwise the event continued without major disruption.

Craig Jackson, Barrett-Jackson chairman, said his staff circled the tents with tractor-trailers to deflect the high winds that were rattling the structures.

As a car guy, he said, it was very sad to see what had happened at the Russo and Steel auction site.

RM Auctions reported the highest sale of the week so far on Thursday night at the Arizona Biltmore. A 1963 Aston Martin DB4 sold for $1 million.

On Friday morning, the Arizona Department of Public Safety closed the eastbound on-ramp to the Loop 101 at Scottsdale Road because of the cleanup efforts at Russo and Steele.

The freeway was closed in both directions between Scottsdale and Hayden roads for several hours after the tent landed on the roadway.

Russo and Steele, a Valley-based company, is in its 10th year of holding car auctions in Scottsdale.

Clerical errors in Cash-for-Clunkers spare phantom exotics

One of the more sensational stories to come out of the government's Cash-for-Clunkers program was the handful of rare, expensive, luxury or exotic cars that were supposedly crushed program after owners turned them in so they could buy a new econobox.

Well, Jalopnik has stuck with its investigation of the program and discovered that many of the exotics supposedly submitted were phantoms. They were actually far more mundate vehicles that were incorrectly entered in the computer as something rare.

Jalopnik puts it like this:

For instance...the Aston Martin supposedly crushed wasn't actually an Aston Martin. It was actually a Mercury Grand Marquis some dealership employee entered into the Cash for Clunkers database as the sexy British coupe. While the fuel economy of both vehicles made them a potential for turn-in, the Aston would seem like a stupid choice as the resale value would likely be much higher than the rebates offered.

At least its good to see that the government continues to audit the program.

RM Auctions 2010 Automobiles of Arizona sale report

1963 Aston Martin DB4 GT (shooterz.biz / RM Auctions)RM Auctions, the world’s largest collector car auction house, kicked off its 2010 auction season in Phoenix, Arizona this week, posting over $19.6 million in total sales with an impressive 89% of lots sold.

Returning to the luxurious Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa, the company’s annual Arizona auction was extended to two days this year with the addition of an exclusive British-themed evening auction on Thursday, January 21st ahead of its traditional Friday sale on January 22nd. Despite treacherous weather conditions, it was standing-room only within the auction room for the duration of the two days with bidders travelling to Phoenix from across the continent and as far away as the Netherlands, Switzerland, Israel and Belgium.

‘The addition of ‘The British Are Coming’ event set the stage for a truly memorable two-day event with a strong overall performance,” said Ian Kelleher, President and Chief Operating Officer of RM Auctions.

“As our first auction of 2010, it was very encouraging to see such solid results. The response to this sale, as illustrated in the impressive sell-through rate, is a great reflection of the continuing strength of the market and provides a positive outlook for the year ahead,” he added.

Headlining the two-day sale was a rare 1963 Aston Martin DB4 GT, offered at Thursday’s ‘The British Are Coming’ event. One of only six GT’s known to have full factory lightweight construction details and the last GT to be built and sold by Aston Martin’s Newport Pagnell Factory, this stunning example realized $1,001,000. The DB4 GT headlined a magnificent charge of Aston Martins that dominated the top-seller’s list at the Thursday evening auction. Other highlights included a superbly restored 1965 Aston Martin DB5 for $429,000 and a matched pair of Aston Martin DB Mark III’s, one Drop Head Coupe and one Saloon, which fetched $330,000 and $275,000 respectively.

Top-sellers at Friday’s sale included a stunning, professionally-restored 1967 Shelby 427 Cobra, formerly part of the renowned Otis Chandler Collection, for $632,500; a striking 1932 Duesenberg Model J Tourster for $550,000; and a impressive 1933 Rolls-Royce PII Continental Three-Position Drop Head Coupe for $528,000.

The Friday sale also presented a historic line-up of concept cars by Detroit automakers, headlined by a dramatic, one-off 1954 Mercury XM-800 Dream Car which achieved $429,000, while a unique 1956 Cadillac “Maharani Special” Motorama Show Car exceeded its pre-sale auction estimate of $150,000, selling for $225,500.

RM Auctions will continue its 2010 auction season in Florida in March with the return of its highly anticipated Automobiles of Amelia Island event on March 13th, held in partnership with the world-famous Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance, closely followed by the annual Collector Cars of Fort Lauderdale event, March 26th – 28th.

Official results from the Automobiles of Arizona sale will be posted online at www.rmauctions.com.

Rare Aston Martin DB4 GT sells at Scottsdale auctions

A packed hotel ballroom in Scottsdale right now bears witness to the popularity of British cars -- the Aston Martins, Jaguars, Bentleys and more.

Drive On has come to rainy Phoenix to witness the auctions, such as this one right now by RM Auctions and continuing tomorrow with Barrett-Jackson and other auctions. Tom duPont of the duPont Registery, who was checking out the action, says he was particularly taken with the 1960s Aston Martins, especially the DB4s.

One of them is the 1963 Aston Martin DB4 GT, the one above. This one was the last one produced at Aston's Newport Pagnell factory. It has an aluminum body and a 302-horsepower in-line six-cylinder engine. Bidding opened at $500,000. Applause went up when it cracked the $900,000 mark and the car sold for $910,000 -- considered a bargain since its bretheren have gone for as much as $1.5 million.

RM's sports car specialist Jack Boxstrom knows this car well. He says he raced it about 15 years ago. It's no delicate flower of a car. "It's like an anvil," he says. Only 75 were produced between 1959 and 1963 -- but it's not the Aston that Sean Connery's 007 made famous. That was a DB5.

Endurance News Briefs - January - 2

Post a comment JMW Motorsport - Vantage - ASI 2010 - Tim Yorath

© Tim Yorath

Preparations for the 2010 season are well underway with announcements coming from all over the world. In the last two weeks the potential FIA GT1 World Championship entries were revealed, JaguarRSR and Risi Competizione confirmed their American Le Mans Series crews, Porsche its works drivers and the ACO confirmed plans to start Le Mans scrutineering on Sunday. But there was more!

In Birmingham the Autosport International show took place between January 14-17. Several teams confirmed plans or showed their cars at the show. JMW Motorsport, which recently announced its move from Ferrari to Aston Martin brought the Aston Martin Racing test car with yellow Dunlop sponsoring to Birmingham. Beechdean Mansell Motorsport also showed its livery for the first time. Our colleagues at Dailysportscar spoke with Lotus’ Motorsports Director Claudio Berro who confirmed that Lotus is thinking about an LMP1 entry for 2011. Modena Group Racing, the rebirth of Team Modena, confirmed its plans to run a Ferrari F430 GT2 in the Le Mans Series.

Yesterday our French colleagues at Endurance-Info were able to announce that Pierre Bruneau Compétition will run the works Radical SR9 AER, with several updates, in the 2010 Le Mans Series championship. Pierre Bruneau will be sharing the car with a familiar face, Marc Rostan. A third driver is not signed yet.

From the other side of the Atlantic there are rumours about a Lola Aston Martin. While it seems pretty much a done deal, with Autosport magazine already reporting Fernandez Racing to race the car in the full American Le Mans Series, the article that pretty much confirmed the entry was removed from the Sebring International Raceway. Where there is smoke though… One would expect a British driver, with Aston Martin LMP1 experience, to be part of the crew at Sebring though.

Another potential entry for the American Le Mans Series is the former Black Swan Racing Doran Ford GT. ACS Express Racing, which competed in the SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge GT Championship Presented by Toyo Tires, has reportedly bought the GT2 Ford GT and is planning to run it in this years American Le Mans Series.

With the season less than two months away expect a continuous stream of announcements in the coming weeks…and for those of you that are unable to go to the Sebring 12 Hours, MotorsTV will bring 13 hours of non-stop LIVE coverage of the event on Saturday 20 March.

Updated entry lists for the Le Mans Series, American Le Mans Series and FIA GT1 World Championship can be found via our entrylist page.
