Rolls Royce Ghost to make a comeback by end-2009

Rolls Royce Ghost to make a comeback by end-2009 Rolls-Royce-Ghost

In 1906, the Rolls Royce Silver Ghost was the finest set of wheels one could own. A good hundred and four years later the Ghost nameplate will make a come-back. Rolls Royce announced at the Shanghai Motor Show last month that the prototype 200EX or RR4 that they showcased in the 2009 Geneva Motor Show will be officially called Ghost.

While production of the car will start at the end of the year, the pre-production trim of the Ghost will make an appearance at the 2010 Frankfurt auto show. However, the latest RR has already got itself the nickname of “Baby Rolls” on online forums.

Explaining why the name Ghost is apt for the new car, Rolls-Royce CEO Tom Purves said, "It is one of the most revered names in the automotive industry, evoking images of adventure and technical innovation. The name reflects this new model's breadth of abilities. The first cars to bear the Ghost name were known not only for impressive dependability and refinement but also great flair and style. This car will be the first in a new generation of models to carry this evocative name and will give us two pinnacle product lines – Phantom and Ghost.”

The Ghost will be assembled by a separate assembly line but will share the Goodwood plant’s paint, wood, and leather workshops with the other RR supernatural model Phantom.

The company has also announced that the car will feature a almost-600-hp, turbocharged, 6.6-liter V-12 paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Ghost will slot below the current Phantom range and will be in competition directly with the Bentley Continental Flying Spur as well as the upcoming 2010 Aston Martin Rapide.
