LMS Spa 1000KM - the final race update

Post a comment

LMS - Peugeot - Spa-FrancorchampsWith less than 1,5 hour and a half to go (depending on a possible safety car period) the battle for second position was interrupted by the WR car hitting the #11 Oreca at Eau Rouge. Both cars spun, but were able to get away without any damage visible.

The WR slowly got back to the box with smoke coming out of the back of the car. As a result of the incident Tinseau has moved into second place in his Pescarolo. More pit stops!

At JMW Motorsport things could not have gone more worse as Bruni suffered a puncture on his outlap. The Italian had to complete a full lap before his team could check and repair the car. Lietz and Garcia fly by into first and second.

Team Peugeot Total was still leading the race though, with the #16 Pescarolo about 29 seconds behind in second and the #11 Oreca in third place. Team Essex had a big lead in LMP2. Alphand leading GT1 and Team Modena leading GT2.

Problems for the #009 as the race went into its final hour when Harold Primat spun the Lola Aston Martin and seemed to have problems restarting it. Behind the seven LMP1 cars a big battle for the win in LMP2 was underway as Speedy Racing Team Sebah’s Benjamin Leuenberger was lapping way quicker than Kristian Poulsen in the Essex Porsche.

Unfortunately for the Swiss driver his march towards the Porsche was ended when Bruno Senna made a violent impact with the wall coming out of Blanchimont. It looked like the WR suffering some kind of problem in which oil was leaked onto the track and the Oreca spun on it. The safety car is out once again!

Third placed LMP2 car, the #29 Racing Box Lola Judd, suffered a left rear puncture on its way up through Eau Rouge. The car spun out of control but fortunately nothing was hit. As it continued on the Kemmel Straight body work started to fly though and at Les Combes Piccini went straight over the grass and the escape road.

Still behind the safety car and the field on the pit straight Panis is held at pit exit…the only winner, Tomas Enge who is able to take third.

With 25 minutes on the clock and but only six laps remaining the race went green again. The Team LNT Ginetta Zytek 09S had a big lock-up, but managed to miss everyone.

Nobody was able to challenge Christian Klien anymore and the Austrian driver crossed the finish line after 143 laps, 27.622s clear of Christophe Tinseau in the Pescarolo and a lap clear of Tomas Enge’s Lola Aston Martin.

In LMP2 Leuenberger just missed out on victory and finished second behind Poulsen in the Team Essex Porsche RS Spyder. The gap at the finish not even seven tenths of a second. Giacomo Piccini finished third, 2 laps down.

Yann Clairay drove to victory in the Alphand Corvette, a full lap ahead of the Lamborghini.

In G2 Marc Lieb took the second win of the year for Team Felbermayr Proton. Antonio Garcia secured a great second place for Team Modena, remarkable after their crash just before the weekend during a test. Gianmaria Bruni takes the JMW Motorsport Ferrari to third.
