BMW has unveiled the 5 Series Gran Turismo, a new addition to the 5 Series that will join the estate and saloon models already on offer. For those of you who know their motoring dictionary like the back of their hand, then you'll be aware that 'Gran Turismo' is Italian for a luxury car that delivers some decent performance and is made for long distance travel. So does this new 5 Series Beemer live up to its name? Well, it's no Aston Martin, but on paper it looks like it fulfils all that a Gran Turismo car should be. Especially the most powerful of the three engine options on offer, the 550i GT, capable of a 0-62mph of 5.5 seconds and a top speed of 155mph. The comfort box is thoroughly ticked thanks to a body that is nearly as long as that of the current 7 Series, which according to BMW creates a greater feeling of space for those inside. It also offers the "second greatest amount of legroom" offered by any Beemer, and the headroom is similar to that of a BMW X5. Theres also the option to improve the available boot space from 440 litres up to 1,700 litres, only 50 litres behind the capacity of the beefy BMW X5 SUV and the second largest space compared to all other cars from the German marque. Comfort levels are further raised by a heightened seating position, large windows for enjoying the scenery on a long journey and a range of luxury materials used in the interior design. The 5 Series GT is undoubtedly a big and powerful looking car that we think will be popular with business execs and city types, but it's far from being the most attractive new motor on offer from the BMW marque, in a year which will see the likes of the Z4, 760li and X6 M hit the road. But then, the car is said to be a response to feedback from potential customers who want the luxury of a BMW 7 Series but also the feeling of security and all round visibility offered by the X5, so maybe it will prove a success for the German marque. Only time will tell... This new BMW should go on sale in October with prices from around 40,000. In the mean time, check out pictures of the 5 Series Gran Turismo. Source:
