World champion Lewis Hamilton is facing the true test of his racing credentials - and so far he is struggling to handle it.
That is the stark assessment of fellow Brit Allan McNish, who had an illstarred stint in Formula One but fulfilled his potential in sports cars.
Double Le Mans winner McNish says Hamilton, toiling with this year's McLaren, should look to the likes of Nigel Mansell and Jenson Button for inspiration.
"Lewis must now appreciate how lucky he was to get straight into a winning car," said Audi driver McNish, who goes for his third win in the great French race next weekend. "After his first two years in Formula One he's had a massive wake-up call and realises it can all disappear.
"The question for Lewis is, can he cope? Right now the answer is, he's struggling.
"His career has been largely stage-managed and suddenly he has lost a lot of those support structures, such as his boss, Ron Dennis." McNish urges Hamilton to learn from the example of those who have had to pay their dues.
