Hottest Summer Movie Cars

Doc Brown's DeLorean, Bullitt's Mustang and Bond's Aston Martin -- everyone knows these cars. But without their star-studded appearances on the silver screen, these iconic models might not be so famous today. Now, there's a new crop of movie star cars popping up in this summer's blockbusters, and many of them will eventually arrive on dealership lots. They'll have their moment in the spotlight, but only time will tell if these shiny models will make the leap to supercardom.

Star Trek

You wouldn't expect to see a car in the sci-fi Star Trek, which hit theaters on May 8. So it's only fitting that the film features the Aptera, a futuristic-looking three-wheel electric vehicle. Even more surprising is that the Aptera is slated to go on sale in the U.S. (eventually) for about $26,000. And one final surprise: young Captain Kirk, played by Chris Pine, also drives a classic second-generation Corvette in the movie (off of a cliff). That's a shame --someone must have taken great care of that ‘Vette for it to survive all those years.

Terminator Salvation

If you thought the high number of Chrysler cars in May's Terminator 4 was a coincidence, think again. Early this year, Chrysler announced a sponsorship deal to have their cars featured in the film for an undisclosed sum. We'll see if the product placement works wonders for the ailing automaker, which received a massive government bailout and recently declared bankruptcy. Christian Bale may play John Connor in the film, but the bigger star is a beat-up Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, which serves as an escape vehicle for Kyle Reese. Who knew that the four-door Wrangler could survive Judgment Day?

Angels & Demons

Fiat may have only recently purchased Chrysler, but the Italian automaker inked a nice deal with Hollywood long before that. Fiat Group's Lancia Delta hatchback is featured in May's Da Vinci Code sequel, Angels & Demons. Star Tom Hanks drives the classy black car in several chase scenes around Rome and Vatican City. Fiat has also used the Delta in advertising with the slogan "One angel, 200 demons," which highlights the car's horsepower. While there are no plans to offer the 2009 Delta for sale in the United States, that could change now that Delta owner Fiat has acquired Chrysler. Several Fiat-owned Alfa Romeo 159 models also make appearances in the film.

The Hangover

It isn't your typical action-packed, chase-sequence-heavy blockbuster, but June's The Hangover still manages to squeeze in a hot car. In this comedy starring Bradley Cooper and Heather Graham, the characters take a rare 1969 Mercedes-Benz Cabriolet on a road trip to Las Vegas. And by rare, we mean really hard to come by -- Mercedes produced fewer than 1,000 units of the Cabriolet in the United States. Unfortunately, now there's at least one less. Without giving away too much, we'll just say that the silver Benz featured in the film meets an unfortunate demise.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

Hot celebrities Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox aren't the only draws of the Transformers sequel hitting theaters on June 24. In fact, many moviegoers are more excited about the string of GM cars making appearances as Autobots -- some of which will eventually hit dealership lots. One of these is the long-awaited 2010 Chevrolet Volt, which plays Jolt in the movie and was unveiled at this year's Chicago Auto Show. Another is the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro, which returns as Bumblebee. There's also the Chevrolet Beat plug-in concept, which plays Skids and will hit showrooms in 2011 as the Chevy Spark. For the sequel, Megatron also returns as an Audi R8 ready to face down the Autobots.

Public Enemies

The period film Public Enemies, in theaters July 1, features not one, not two, but over 100 vintage cars. Rather than being a central focus, these cars bring the film's 1930s-era setting to life by making it as authentic as possible. Last year, the film's producers sent out a call for 1930-35 cars, trucks and buses in Wisconsin, where much of it was filmed. This brought in a stream of vintage car owners and eventually led to a Public Enemies Car Show in Iola, Wisconsin. Among the classics featured in the film, which stars Johnny Depp as notorious gangster John Dillinger, are a 1929 Ford Model A Town Sedan and a 1931 Ford Model AA Stake Body Truck.

G.I. Joe: The Rise of the Cobra

It's no surprise that the military-inspired Hummer H2 makes an appearance in G.I. Joe: The Rise of the Cobra, due out August 7. In several leaked set photos, Snake Eyes (played by Ray Park) leaps on top of an H2, which eventually crashes and flips over during a high-speed action sequence. Previous reports said that the Hummer HX concept would appear, but so far, that hasn't been confirmed. Set photos also show a Saab 9000 wrecked during an action sequence.
