Less than a month since his father passed IndyCar rookie Mario Moraes stepped back into the No. 5 car of KV Racing Technology after one missed event, at Mid-Ohio, to put his feelings temporarily aside and he came out with his two best performances of his young career.
First Moraes drove to a fourth place finish in Sonoma, then on Saturday night he put on a great show with the IndyCar power houses of Ganassi and Penske throughout the 200 lap shootout around the lit up 1.5 mile track.
The KV Racing Technology crew stressed patience in the early goings of the race, to ensure some more seat time for Moraes who qualified on the fourth row (eighth position). He calmly saved fuel, but really pressed the issue with anyone on the track when instructed to. Before the final pit stop Moraes found himself with the lead pack, with eventual race winner Ryan Briscoe and runner-up Scott Dixon. The three separated themselves and looked to be destined for a podium finish.
