Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines and get ready for some fun! The second annual Cohasset Day (www.cohassetday.com) is tomorrow (Saturday Sept. 12th). All senses will be catered to at this event which includes music for the ears, food to please the palate; and gorgeous fashions and classic cars for the eyes to revel in.
(The rain date for the event is Sunday, Sept. 13).
The theme of the second annual Car Concours is “Antique, Classic and Exotic Touring, Racing and Sports Automobiles.” More than 20 cars, in “show” condition will be part of the Classic Car Parade which will begin at 2:30 p.m. beginning at Brook Street and South Main (in front of Dependable Cleaners) and go up North Main Street and loop back around the Common and South Main, ending at the Citgo station where they will remain for public viewing.
“This is all about excellence in motorcar design, beautiful craftsmanship and a high quality event — all to match the quality of the people and the beauty of our Town,” says Pete Brown, Cohasset Day Chairman and Coordinator of the Car Concours.
Prior to the kick off of Cohasset Day, the show car owners will be meeting for judged events including: Championship Class (a rigorous 100 point judging system for best of show, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th places); a special Cohasset Class Award (a less rigorous 20 point judging system for 1st , 2nd 3rd & 4th place); and the Peoples Choice awards. For the People’s Choice Awards categories, the public is asked to cast their ballots, on Cohasset Day, for Best of Show, Hottest Car and Kid’s Favorite.
This year’s returning Cohasset cars include: Dick Avery with his 1962 356 C Porsche which took Best of Show last year. Rob Willms’ 1990 C-4 racing Porsche which placed third last year; Woody Chittick’s silver 1971 280SL Mercedes convertible; Al Moore’s white 1967 Austin Healy MK III convertible (the last year they were made for the US market); Jim Hazen’s 1954 Aston Martin DB 2/4; Marty Hale with two Jaguars: a British racing green 1962 XKE Race Coupe and a 1967 E type coupe; Mark Toomey’s silver 1969 Mercedes SL roadster convertible; Tom Hamilton’s black 1986 944-Turbo Porsche; Dick Karoff with a Dodge Dart convertible;
New Cohasset entrants for 2009 include: Jerry Schultz’s restored 1957 Jaguar XK 140; Bill Earon’s — 2008 Aston Martin DB9; John Tireel and his black 1997 Ferrari 355 challenge and a 1959 Triumph TR3; Tom Littauer’s red 1967 Corvette Roadster; Dan Rattner’s black Lincoln Continental Convertible; and Anna Abbruzzese with her 1978 Red Volkswagen convertible.
In addition to Cohasset car owners, there will be a red 1992, 348 TS Ferrari and a Rolls Royce Corniche Convertible and several other gorgeous cars from Hingham, Scituate and Medfield and Boston. All cars will tour together on a four mile route through Cohasset from 2-2:30 pm along Atlantic Avenue, Border Street and Gannett Road in North Scituate before arriving on South Main Street in the Village.
Fashions
Classic is the buzzword for the car parade, and most likely, some classic favorites will be found among the new and gorgeous fall fashions featured at the Fashion Show. The show, which promises to be a highlight of the day, will be held from 2- 2:30 p.m. on the stage which will be set up in front of the former Cohasset Hardware store at the Corner of Elm and South Main streets.
The show will give Cohasset Day goers a taste of all three local clothing boutiques which include Ports & Co., and newcomers to Cohasset Day, Pink Tulip, owned by Scituate resident, Christine Habegger and Wendy’s Closet, owned by Cohasset’s Wendy Mazer. Each of these stores carries unique and beautiful clothes. The show will be 30 minutes of fashion for ages 20 to 70 +…everything from tees to items appropriate for the most formal occasion.
“People aren’t shopping just to shop,” anymore says Ports & Co. owner, Lisa Lynch who is also Cohasset Day Coordinator of the Fashion Show. “They are very careful what they buy and they’re buying for a specific reason; a wedding, a reunion; a fundraiser.”
Lynch calls this “purposeful” shopping in which people buy clothes to fit a need rather than simply for fun. She especially enjoys showing customers how to be “fashion forward” yet still age-appropriate and comfortable in what they’re wearing. All three stores will show what’s going on in fashion as local friends and neighbors play “model for a day” and strut their stuff showing off the latest in dresses, tunics and other fabulous fall clothing.
“During the summer everyone is doing their own thing. Cohasset Day is a nice way to reconnect and see faces I haven’t seen in a while. I consider September as my new year — it’s a beginning, and what better way to begin than with a town-wide celebration,” says Lynch.
The stage is set for a fantastic day in this small seaside town….and no local stage would be complete without the presence and voice of Cohasset’s own Rich Ofsthun. Rich, whom most will recognize from the PSO telethon which he has co hosted with Lucia Flibotte for the past five years, also hosts “Free Lunch”, an occasional series on lunch spots around town which can be found on wickedlocal.com. He also serves as Commodore of the Cohasset Sailing Club. He and his wife Kathy have three sons and the family has lived in Cohasset for 16 years.
“This is a town that has it all. You get back more than you put in. It should be celebrated!” says Ofsthun.
Cohasset Day is from 12:30 – 6 p.m. and there will be something for everyone from age 1 to 100. The downtown will be closed to vehicular traffic and all will be encouraged to stroll through the stores and browse and shop the sidewalk tables that will be lining the streets. In addition, everyone is encouraged to head over to the South Shore Art Center, the Historic Society and our beautiful Common for tug of war, dunk tank, rowboats on the duck pond and Touch a Truck in the Town Hall parking lot. There will be a parade procession down Main Street featuring the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Decorated Bike Parade, Decorated Dog Parade, music from the Rusty Skippers and local sports teams and groups. There will also be a special Saturday edition of the Farmer’s Market.
The only event within an event that has a fee is the Fine Food Galore event featuring more than 22 local eateries. Today is the last day to buy Fine Food Galore tickets at the advance price of $20 for families and $10 for individuals. Tickets are available at Darilynn’s and French Memories in the Village or Stop & Shop (Cohasset). Tickets will be available tomorrow with an event day price of $25 for families and $15 for individuals.
Cohasset Day is a joint initiative of the Cohasset Chamber of Commerce and the Cohasset Economic Development Committee. Donations will be made to the Council on Elder Affairs, the Cohasset Food Pantry and the American Legion.
