Classic cars to feature in motor expo

Abu Dhabi: Twenty-four classic cars will feature in a dynamic motor expo which opens tomorrow at the new Manarat Al Saadiyat on Saadiyat Island with 11 of the vehicles being given ‘pop-art' makeovers.

The free-to-attend exhibition — Art Cars — will run until November 30 and is part of Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority's (ADTA) visitor experience enhancement programme.

Open 10am-8pm daily, Art Cars features classical vehicles from Europe and the USA — such as a 1959 Chevrolet Impala, a 1968 Mercedes 120SL and a Rolls Royce from 1975 — painted in designs inspired by the visual, mass pop art movement of the 50s and 60s, made famous by US artist Andy Warhol.

And with local artists including Mohammad Kanoo, Wasel Safuan and Noora Suwaidi, joining international names such as China's Li Jikai, Singapore's Benjamin Puah and Vincent Leow and emerging French contemporary artist, Fabien Verwchaere, Art Cars' visitors will be in for a one-of-a-kind art adventure.

Art movement

"We are combining classic cars, one of the 20th century's most influential art movements, top talent and putting it all on public display," said Ahmad Hussain, Deputy Director General, ADTA.

"This exhibition will appeal to art enthusiasts, car lovers and anyone with an appreciation for creativity and flair. Art Cars is a perfect complement to the Grand Prix weekend, Saadiyat Island's promise to deliver high-level artistic programmes and the government's strategy of positioning Abu Dhabi as a catalyst for tourism, arts and culture on the local, regional and international stage."

Housed at the 15,400 square metre Manarat Al Saadiyat, which literally means ‘a place that provides enlightenment', Art Cars will be the first automotive exhibition held at the dedicated artistic venue on Saadiyat Island — the 27 km cultural and tourism destination lying 500 metres offshore the UAE capital.

Designer vehicles

When the exhibition closes, the designer cars — which also include three modern sports cars, an Aston Martin DB7 and two BMW Z8s — will be auctioned off with a portion of the proceeds going to charity.

"These one-of-a-kind moving masterpieces give people a chance to own a bit of art history whilst also contributing to a good cause," added Hussain.
