Top Gear Live heads to SA

19 January 2010

The world's most popular and zaniest car show returns to South Africa at the end of January when Top Gear's Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May present Top Gear Live in Cape Town and Johannesburg. The mysterious "tame racing driver", The Stig, will be in action too.

On this tour, Clarkson and Hammond will take charge of the show in Cape Town, while Clarkson and May will team up in Johannesburg. They will be joined by popular South African radio DJ and motorsport presenter Sasha Martinengo.

Invitations

The Top Gear presenters have put together a couple of invitations for people to join them:

Cape Town's shows will be hosted by the Grand Arena at Grandwest Casino and Entertainment World from 28 to 31 January. In Johannesburg, the shows take place at the Coca-Cola Dome from 4 to 7 February.

When it comes to Top Gear, one doesn't have to be a car lover to be thoroughly entertained by the witty humour of the presenters. Their shows are about fun, about challenges, and about laughing at oneself and when they laugh it is easy to laugh along with them.

Top Gear Live Theatre

Top Gear Live Theatre is not about discovering what nice, new, sensible cars people might consider buying in the not too distant future. No, it's about performance machines, prestigious marques, world debuts, crazy stunts, mad car chases and superb driving. And always, it is served up with a large dollop of laughter.

According to Clarkson: "We've turned your favourite motoring television show into the most spectacular motoring theatre show in the universe. We'll be taking all the best bits of Top Gear, and ambitiously attempting them live in our action arena. I'm sure it will work out well!"

The Stig will team up with three stunt drivers to show what precision driving is all about. And this being Top Gear, the stunts will be ambitious; that's the thing about Top Gear, the challenges they set themselves are usually ambitious and that often leads to hilarious foul-ups. Although, truth be told, the mess-ups are the domain of Clarkson, Hammond and May and not The Stig, who never talks and whose face is always hidden by his helmet.

Other attractions

The show itself lasts 90 minutes, but there are plenty of other attractions surrounding it to ensure that it is a cant-miss experience for motoring lovers.

The MPH Gallery features the most desirable names in the world of cars: among them, Ferrari, Porsche, Aston Martin, Lamborghini and Maserati. It is an opportunity for visitors to get up close to cars they seldom see, vehicles most can only dream about. There will be some cars that have never before been seen in South Africa.

The Motoring Pavilion focuses on its South African audience as manufacturers show what is new in the country.

Interactive and experiential

In addition, The Performance Zone is a new feature created by TopGear Live which gives motoring manufacturers an opportunity to show off their brands and vehicles in an interactive and experiential format.

It will comprise six large zones and confirmed participants are Mercedes-Benz, Ausi, Mitusbishi, General Motors, BP, Pirelli, and Ferrari.

One will also be able to buy momentos, goodies and more, ranging from fine wines to luxury goods, fashion to the latest electronic technology, in the Style Piazza.
