The big cat returns: Jaguar's XK convertible
If you like nice British cars, but don't want to pony up a fortune for an Aston Martin, the Jaguar XK is worth a look. We got two convertibles. The first had the base 300 horsepower V-8 engine, hooked to a 6-speed automatic gearbox. It was quick, hitting 60 mph in just over 6 seconds. The exhaust is quiet at low speeds, but makes a loud growl at higher operating modes. The steering has limited feel, but is quick enough. Handling is very good on tight roads. The ride is firm, but reasonably comfortable unless you hit rough pavement. The interior is well done, with plenty of luxurious materials. Our second vehicle was the XKR, which adds a supercharger boosting horsepower to 420. With this one, I hit 60 mph in 4.8 seconds. This will cost you more though. The base XK coupe starts at $77,000 or $80,000 for the soft top. The supercharged XKR convertible with all options hit the $100,000 mark. But those who can afford the price of admission won't be disappointed.
