McLaren to Stay True to Heritage as Sports Car Makers

McLaren boss, Ron Dennis, has confirmed to reporters that the British auto company will not make anything but sports cars in the future. He also said that two new models are on the way: a flagship model that is likely to take on competitors such as Ferrari, Pagani, or Aston Martin and another entry-level model that will take on the likes of Porsche 911 and Audi R8.

McLaren is currently busy with the production of the MP4-12C supercar, which is scheduled to hit the showrooms in the second half of 2011. However, one thing has been made abundantly clear. McLaren will not produce anything other than sports cars. Unlike its rivals, it shall not be making any sedan, saloon, SUV or other variant. However, Dennis agreed to the availability of a racing version of the new new MP4-12C in the future.

The MP4-12C is the first car from the stable of McLaren Automotive, a brand new sports car company announced by McLaren recently. McLaren is also looking forward to make efficient vehicles that emit lower CO2 emissions and weigh less than other cars in similar category.

“We intend to have a diverse product range but they will all have two seats,” Dennis said. “This is our heritage – we are sports car makers and the engine will be in the back of all our cars.”
