Canadian Saturn dealers lose out

he Saturn brand's lack of a profitable small car and its pairing with another ailing brand in Saab in Canada helped prompt the decision to close all Canadian Saturn and Saab outlets in the next few months, according to the company that will keep the brand alive in the U.S.

Tony Pordon, senior vice-president for the Penske Automotive Group, said there were various roadblocks to a distribution deal for Saturn in Canada, but the primary one was that neither GM nor Penske would be able to offer enough small cars to make the proposition viable Canada.

Although both companies said they studied continuing the Saturn brand in Canada, Pordon defends the call to drop the Saturn brand in Canada past the end of 2009 as a joint GM Canada and Penske decision.

“To say Penske's pulling the plug on Canada, I don't think it's fair at all,” said Pordon in an interview this week. “At best, it was a joint decision.”

The memorandum of understanding PAG signed with GM in June will provide Saturn dealers in the United States with continued supplies of the Aura mid-size sedan, the Outlook full-size crossover and the smaller Vue crossover for about two years; after that Penske will arrange its own supply of vehicles to be sold at Saturn dealers, reportedly through Renault-Samsung vehicles coming from South Korea, vehicles based on shared Renault-Nissan platforms.

The compact three- and five-door Saturn Astra hatchback that's now available has gone out of production, although the Astra is still built and available in near-identical form in Europe as an Opel and Vauxhall in the U.K. Roger Penske, CEO of PAG, said the deal would save 350 Saturn dealers in the United States when the MOU was announced in June, which employed about 13,000 employees.

Many of the Canadian dealers have already jumped ship to other brands, or closed entirely, as there are now 46 Saturn dealers in the country, down from 66 in June, according to Stew Low, GM Canada's director of communications.

“As local Saturn stores cease operations, customer service, parts and warranty needs will transition to local GM dealerships,” Low said this week.

BRP expanding Spyder lineup

After making a successful market splash with its three-wheel Can-Am Spyder in North America and Europe, Bombardier Recreational Products will introduce a more comfort-oriented Spyder RT touring model for 2010.

Still looking more like a sporty snowmobile for the street than a motorcycle, Spyder riders in Canada will continue to need a motorcycle licence to drive one.

The new addition to the lineup means that the sportier Spyder now becomes the Spyder RS (roadster sport), while the new Spyder RT (roadster touring) is set to arrive in Can-Am dealers for test rides this fall, with sales beginning in the fourth quarter.

Despite only one letter separating the two designations – bike makers are even better at confusing customers than letter- and number-addicted car makers – the RT looks very different from the RS, with more car-like bodywork and windswept integrated storage areas far removed from the boxy add-ons typically seen even on factory accessories on touring bikes.

Both models will continue to offer manual and semi-automatic (clutchless) transmissions, as well as electronic stability control, ABS and roll mitigation, and will share the same 998-cc V-twin Rotax engine that produces 100 hp.

The RT will offer an optional trailer that will provide a trunk-humbling 622 litres of storage space, what the firm calls an industry-first in its segment.

The RT appeals to those more used to car-level niceties than bike ones by offering features such as cruise control, an electrically adjustable front windscreen, AM/FM stereo with full iPod integration into the handlebar and front and rear heated hand grips.

No prices have been announced yet, but it will surely be priced higher than the under$20,000 starting price of the Spyder RS in Canada.

Mercedes to launch production fuel cell

Mercedes-Benz has reminded the automotive world that electric cars are not the only enviro-friendly option out there with news that it will produce a limited number of fuel-cell vehicles, called the B-Class F-Cell, in the United States and Europe by the end of 2009.

The first fuel-cell vehicles – about 200 are planned for production – will arrive in early 2010, Mercedes-Benz said.

The vehicle will have a range of 400 km and will be powered by a fuel-cell system that transforms gaseous, pressurized hydrogen as well as oxygen into current for an electric motor.

Not only is Mercedes promising more range than any of the planned all-electric cars from mainstream auto makers, but it also says the car can be refuelled in three minutes – with the proper hydrogen pumps, of course.

The lack of those pumps is why Canada and perhaps many countries won't be seeing vehicles such as the F-Cell on the road soon, although Mercedes says it is working with governments, oil companies and other infrastructure players in California, Hamburg and Stuttgart.

BMW said to be eying Toyota iQ microcar

After the mind-bending news that Aston Martin may develop a version of Toyota's tiny iQ microcar, complete with Aston styling cues, rumours are now circulating that BMW is negotiating with Toyota for its own version of the 3+1 city car.

Both Autoexpress in England and the Inside Line website in the United States are reporting that BMW is interested in a smaller Mini, or perhaps even a revival of its tiny Isetta brand. In return, Toyota would reportedly receive rights to the upcoming Mini Coupe that was officially shown in concept form on Mini's 50th anniversary last week.

The jazzier but familiar-looking two-seater will appear later this month at the Frankfurt auto show, along with its convertible counterpart, both of which ride on current John Cooper Works mechanicals. Powered by the same 211 hp blown four, but weighing about 200 lb less without the rear seats, both are planned to go on sale around the world in 2011, according to the Inside Line report.

Livin' the Dream at the Wheel of an Aston Martin One-77

Supercars are by definition exclusive. Cars like the Bugatti Veyron, Ferrari Enzo and McLaren F1 sit at the pinnacle of automotive development, a rarefied place where engineering is unfettered by accounting. Cost is no object with cars like these. Their only purpose is perfection.

Even by that definition, the Aston Martin One-77 stands alone. The British automaker best known as James Bonds’ car of choice will build just 77 of them. Each will cost $1.8 million.

The super-exclusive, super-expensive supercar seamlessly melds racing technology and fine craftsmanship in a hand-made automobile capable of blistering acceleration. It may be the finest car Aston Martin has produced in the 96 years since it was founded.

That’s exactly the point.

“This car is the result of a vision,” Julian Jenkins, vice president and general manager of Aston Martin North America, told Wired.com. “We wanted to take everything we are and everything we’ve done and create an iconic future classic. It epitomizes Aston Martin.”

There is at the moment exactly one One-77 on the planet, and it recently made an appearance at a Monterey winery during the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance weekend.

We were there to snap some pics and get the details on a car so exclusive even James Bond doesn’t have one.

Forza Motorsport 3 video game preview

Players can get under the bonnets of the cars themselves, tweaking engines and wheel-axels just how they like them

Format: Xbox 360 (exclusive) Developer: Turn 10 Publisher: Microsoft Games Studios Released: 23 October 2009

It’s perhaps not in my best interests to kick off a preview by detailing my ineptitude, but in Forza’s case, I’m willing to make an exception. Barrelling around the gorgeous track of Montserrat in a glistening Aston Martin, I brake late and zip into a corner too fast. With the apex of the curve on an incline, my tires kick up off the smallest integer sending my poor, beautiful car into a pirouette. I spin wildly off the bump, all four wheels leaving the ground before I crash back down onto the grass verge on the other side of the track.

Now, ‘useless driver goes too fast into corner and spins out’ is hardly headline news for a motorsport video game as technical and revered as Forza, but going into that corner, I felt every single little bump, I felt the exact point where the wheels twisted my fate. The maths are that the tyre physics refresh at 360htz, meaning the track updates every 0.8ft, apparently. Frankly, I don’t have a clue what those numbers mean on a technical level, so I’ll happily leave them for the fact sheet. What I do know, as I found out all too well, is how those numbers translate into the drive that Forza provides. Somehow I doubt the tag-line "it’s never been bumpier" will make it on to the back of the box, but the feedback and authenticity of feeling every deviation in the track was what left the greatest impression.

Of course, it’s possible that that’s because spiralling off the track became something of a theme. Luckily, this Forza 3 aims to be the most approachable ‘serious’ racing simulation yet, from the ‘rewind’ feature which allowed me to go back in time during a race at the press of the button to the multitude of assists you can switch on and off before the start of every race. Steve Beiner, Head of Marketing for Microsoft Games Studios insists that while the third entry in the series will make a huge push for the uninitiated, developer Turn 10 have in no way ‘dumbed down’ the racing experience. Turn all the assists on, such as ABS, suggested racing lines and even an auto-brake, and Forza 3 is a laid back Sunday drive. The game cheerily holding your hand while you pilot a gorgeous car of your choosing through a winding mountainside track, spectacular views stretching out below you.

Turn all the assists off, however, and you have a ferocious, precise and technically brilliant racing simulator. This approach to being everything to every man could cause the wheels to come off, but Turn 10 seem to have struck that elusive balance. This ethos stretches to the career mode. If you wish, you can zip through all of the impossibly sleek menus -all clean whites and stylish sweeps- by tapping the A button, the game selecting your next race, the perfect car for it and tuning it up depending on how many in-game credits you’ve accrued. You are on the track and behind the wheel within a few button presses.

The more petrolheaded among us, however, can take their time in the garage. Building up a selection of finely-tuned machines that Jay Leno would be envious of, getting under the bonnet themselves, tweaking engines and wheel-axels just how they like them. The career for them is not a few sweeps of a menu screen, but a daunting grid of 200 events, waiting to be conquered.

Throughout Forza 3’s development, Turn 10 have repeatedly proclaimed it the ‘definitive racing simulation of this generation’. This is presumably code for "we’re going to be better than Gran Turismo 5." We still have to see what Sony’s racing giant has stored in its own garage, but on this evidence Microsoft’s Forza has set the bar. The race is truly on.

Aston Martin Victorious at Nürburgring 1000km

Aston Martin Victorious at Nürburgring 1000km Aug 31st, 2009 | Category: General

Aston Martin Racing claimed a sensational first, second and third at the ADAC 1000km of Nürburgring, 50 years on from Aston Martin’s 1959 win in the classic German endurance race with the DBR1.

The 007 Gulf liveried LMP1 car of Jan Charouz (CZ), Tomáš Enge (CZ) and Stefan Mücke (DE) finished first, recording their second win of the season and fourth podium finish from four races.

The 009 car of Harold Primat (CH) and Darren Turner (GB) finished second. The third Aston Martin Racing entry of Chris Buncombe (GB), Stuart Hall (GB) and Miguel Ramos (PT) finished just behind 009, securing an all Aston Martin podium.

The trio of Aston Martins made a clean start to the 195 lap race which started at 12:30 local time. Mücke and Turner held first and second places respectively in their 007 and 009 LMP1 cars. Ramos in the 008 car quickly made up two places finishing eighth by the end of his first stint.

Just under one hour into the race the Aston Martins stopped for fuel. Mücke and Turner remained in 007 and 009 to rejoin for double stints on their Michelin tyres, while Ramos handed the wheel of the 008 Aston Martin to British driver Buncombe who worked his way up to sixth.

At the next round of pit stops, Mücke and Turner were replaced by Charouz in the 007 and Primat in the 009. The 007 car stopped for slightly longer than usual to allow the team to fit a larger rear deck gurney to reduce oversteer on the car and improve handling. The 007 pit crew worked at lightning speed, changing the part in just over 10 seconds and 007 rejoined the race in first place. In 008 Buncombe remained in the Michelin-shod Aston Martin and moved up a further place to fifth before the end of his double stint. New to the car for this race, Buncombe adapted quickly to the Aston Martin and was soon on the pace of the leaders.

Just after 3pm local time with the race well underway and Aston Martin Racing’s main rivals suffering from mechanical issues, the cars pitted for the third time. Buncombe was in first, handing the reigns of 008 to fellow British driver Stuart Hall. Primat and Turner switched in 009 and the team performed the same change to the rear deck gurney on the 009 car, again with minimum disruption to the pit stop. In the 007 Aston Martin, Charouz remained behind the wheel, stopping for fuel only before continuing in first place.

After three hours and 100 laps the cars were running first, second and fourth. The team held its breath when Charouz suffered a spin in the 007 Aston Martin on lap 110 but the car was undamaged and he retained first position.

By lap 112 Aston Martin was occupying the top three places with the order 007, 009 and 008 and this remained the same until just after the four hour mark when 009, on fresh tyres passed sister car 007 to take the lead.

By this time Czech driver Enge was in the 007, Turner was back behind the wheel of 009 and Hall remained in 008 to complete his double stint.

At just after 5pm local time Hall returned 008 to the pits in third place and Buncombe took over for the second time, staying behind the wheel until the end of the race. Turner pitted shortly afterwards with Primat taking over for his second session in 009.

Enge pitted from first on lap 163 and German driver Mücke returned to the wheel of the 007 to the finish, taking the chequered flag at his home race. Pole sitter Mücke was officially the quickest man on track today, setting the fastest lap of the race with a time of 01min 44.125s.

All three Aston Martins ran trouble free for the duration of the race, stopping only for seven scheduled pit stops each.

The result marks the team’s best achievement yet in the Le Mans Series says Team Principal, George Howard-Chappell: “Absolutely brilliant! I couldn’t have dreamt of a one, two, three. The result is a real tribute to the team, the drivers and the whole organisation. I would particularly like to thank Michelin for their support and their valued help. All round it is just fantastic and the flags will definitely be flying at the Aston Martin Racing headquarters in the UK tomorrow morning.”

DRIVER QUOTES 007
Jan Charouz (CZ): “For us as a team of three this is a good result but for Aston Martin it is even better. We are now leading the Team and Driver Championships and it puts us in a much better position for Silverstone which is a race we are confident will suit the car. I think we are all looking forward to the last race of the season and we hope we can win the Championship.”

Tomáš Enge (CZ): “This was a really important race for the whole team and also for Aston Martin. We are very happy to be leading by seven points but anything can happen in the last race and the Championship is by no means decided but at least we are in a strong position for the title. I’m really looking forward to the last race which is the home race for the team and the employees at Aston Martin Racing and Aston Martin so I’m sure we will have a lot of supporters.”

Stefan Mücke (D): “It was absolutely fantastic, the team did a great job and we had almost no issues during the race. In qualifying the car was good and at the end of the race the car was perfect. I’m so pleased to have won my home race, it is an amazing feeling.”

DRIVER QUOTES 008
Chris Buncombe (GB): “This is a fantastic result. A podium finish was always the aim but we didn’t know how achievable it would be. To be here driving for Aston Martin this weekend is a dream. I’ve learnt a lot and I treated it as a learning weekend so to come away with a podium is just fantastic. This was the first time I have driven the car and now I know what to expect, I can’t wait for Silverstone.”

Stuart Hall (GB): “It’s great to be back in the car and it’s great that Aston Martin had faith in me. I couldn’t really ask for more. It is the first time that myself, Chris and Miguel have driven together. We are a good team and we jelled very well. It’s been a while since I last drove the car but I think we showed great pace. I’m going to enjoy this result for the next week or so and then look forward to Silverstone. It’s my favourite circuit and there is no better place for a British driver to race than Silverstone. I know the circuit really well so you never know, hopefully we can get another good result there too.”

Miguel Ramos (PT): “A podium finish is a great result for me and my new team-mates. We all put in solid performances and we had a great race.”

DRIVER QUOTES 009
Harold Primat (CH): “It was fine with just two of us in the car as it gave us more driving time and more time to work on finding the best set-up. Darren is a very good solid driver so I’m happy to be partnering him because he is pushing me to improve. It’s great to finally be on the podium, it’s a good feeling and great for improving confidence.”

Darren Turner (GB): “It’s an amazing feeling to finish on the podium, to be up there with our team-mates and George, the three cars below and the whole team cheering us on was just a great feeling. It’s a great testament to the team to get three cars home in any race but to get three cars home and on the podium when the competition is so strong in this series is a real achievement. It has been a great day for everyone.”

Aston Martin Racing heads to Silverstone, UK for the fifth round of the Le Mans Series on 13 September 2009. The 007 Aston Martin will start the final round of the 2009 Le Mans Series at their home race with a seven point lead in the Teams Championship

What's new in 2010 models, carmaker by carmaker

Auto company executives know that car buyers this recessionary year are serious about value, safety and improved fuel mileage.

So it's no wonder that some retail prices on new, 2010 models — such as the Ford Taurus and Toyota Prius — have held steady from 2009 even though both cars have substantial changes.

It's also not surprising that safety features continue to be added as standard — not optional — equipment on many new vehicles.

For instance, both Chevrolet and GMC add curtain air bags, which provide head protection in side crashes, as standard equipment on all their respective Colorado and Canyon pickup trucks for 2010.

Car shoppers will find that engines in many new vehicles are more fuel efficient than ever this model year.

As an example, the 2010 Buick LaCrosse will offer a fuel-thrifty four-cylinder engine. The mid-size LaCrosse sedan never offered a four banger before.

Even Mercedes-Benz is taking a new approach to fuel efficiency in 2010 with the introduction of two hybrid models.

Alas, there's also a somber side to the 2010 model year. The number of vehicle nameplates being discontinued from production totals more than 15 and is the highest one-year dropoff in decades. Among the names disappearing with the new model year are the Dodge Durango, Pontiac Solstice, Suzuki XL7, Honda S2000 and Mercury Sable.

Here are details of the 2010 model year:

ACURA

Look closely at Acura's new-for-2010 ZDX. If you only take in the overall shape, you might miss that this coupe-shaped vehicle with hidden rear door handles has four doors. Due out at the end of the 2009 calendar year, the five-passenger ZDX crossover sport utility vehicle is powered by a 300-horsepower, 3.7-liter V-6 mated to a six-speed automatic transmission and comes standard with Acura's Super Handling All-Wheel Drive. Pricing hasn't been announced.

Meantime, Acura adds a V-6 to its TSX sedan for the first time. The 201-horsepower, four-cylinder engine remains, but the 3.5-liter, V-6 offers 280 horses. The four-cylinder, 2010 TSX starts around $30,000 retail, with destination charge included, while the TSX with V-6 starts at more than $34,800.

Acura's two SUVs — the RDX and MDX — are updated for 2010 with bolder grilles, subtle rear styling changes and interior refinements. In addition, the RDX is available for the first time with two-wheel drive. This means starting retail price for an RDX falls to below $34,000.

ASTON MARTIN

Sold off by Ford Motor Co. in 2007, the Aston Martin brand made famous by movie spy James Bond is busy following through on the company's first four-door car. The four-seat Rapide, displayed as a concept car at auto shows in recent years, earned high praise for its seductive looks. Finally, it will be out early in calendar 2010 as a production model. The Rapide will come with a 470-horsepower, 5.9-liter V-12 and a price tag expected to be around $250,000.

That's nothing, however, compared with Aston Martin's oh-so-exclusive One-77 supercar. The One-77 coupe, already sold out, will go to just 77 buyers around the world, who will get an exotic car with a carbon fiber chassis, a 700-horsepower, 7.3-liter V-12 and aluminum body. Price: $1.7 million.

Meantime, the Aston Martin DBS adds a convertible for 2010. The DBS Volante has striking looks, a 510-horsepower, 5.9-liter V-12 and standard six-speed manual transmission. Just watch the Volante's two back seats. They are snug, even for teen-agers. Starting retail price is more than $285,000.

AUDI

Perhaps the most riveting news is the addition of a V-10 to the sleek, exotic-looking Audi R8 supercar. The all-wheel drive R8 has been sold so far with a 420-horse, 4.2-liter V-8 that surely doesn't lack power. But the new, 5.2-liter V-10 produces 525 horsepower and can propel the two-seat R8 from standstill to 60 miles an hour in less than 3.9 seconds.

It'll cost you, though. Starting retail price, including destination charge, with the V-10 is $147,200.

In 2010, Audi becomes the first automaker in the United States to have an entire model lineup with a direct injection engine system. It boosts performance and fuel economy by carefully metering fuel going into the engine.

In other news, there's a lower-priced, base Audi A5 now, because a 2-liter, turbocharged, four-cylinder engine is among the offerings. The powerplant produces 211 horsepower in the base A5 coupe, which starts at $36,825.

The Audi A3 adds a fuel-thrifty, 2-liter, diesel, four-cylinder engine for the first time in the States, which boosts government fuel economy ratings to 30/42 mpg.

The Audi A6 sedan gets a more powerful V-6. The 3.2-liter V-6 for this five-seater adds Audi Valvelift System (AVS) to help it generate 265 horses in 2010.

Meantime, the A8 in 2010 will no longer be available with W-12 engine, and the S8 is discontinued.

BENTLEY

The maker of distinctive — and large, expensive — autos put its Bentley Continental GT on a diet and reworked the car's interior, its 12-cylinder engine and suspension. The result is the fastest production Bentley ever. In fact, the company says its Continental Supersports two-seater rivals a Ferrari.

Powered by a 621-horsepower, 6-liter, twin-turbocharged W-12 engine, the Supersports has been timed going 0 to 60 mph in some 3.7 seconds. Top speed is 204 mph.

Intriguingly, Bentley engineers also massaged the engine software so the engine can operate on E85 fuel, a mixture of ethanol and gasoline. Premium gasoline continues to work fine, too.

Fuel economy for the Continental Supersports still is poor, though, at an estimated 12 mpg in the city and 19 mpg on the highway.

Starting retail price is north of $265,000.

Also in 2010, the already striking Bentley Continental GTC open top car gets the Speed treatment. This means the GTC Speed convertible has 48 more horses — for a total of 600 — from its 6-liter, twin-turbocharged W-12 engine compared with a "regular" GTC.

The GTC Speed can be had with optional ceramic brakes and has some subtle exterior updates to distinguish it. Starting retail price is more than $237,000.

In 2010, there's only one Bentley Azure, the T, and its 6.8-liter, turbocharged V-8 produces 50 more horsepower than before, for a total of 500. Torque is even more astounding at 738 foot-pounds. Price, if you have to ask, is more than $350,000.

Lastly, Bentley drops the Arnage for the 2010 model year as the company prepares for its new flagship sedan, the Mulsanne, in calendar 2010.

BMW

Think of BMW's 5-Series Gran Turismo as a blimped-up, mid-size sedan with a rear hatch. Based on the 5-Series sedan, the 2010 5-Series Gran Turismo is longer, wider and taller. Even the wheelbase is stretched. And the Gran Turismo has a hatchback rear end. Three engines are available, including a 3-liter, twin-turbocharged diesel six cylinder and a 400-horsepower, 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V-8.

And for the 2010 model year at least, BMW will retain its 5-Series station wagon, alongside the new Gran Turismo.

In other news, BMW adds M versions to its X5 and X6 lines in the 2010 model year. Both X5 M and X6 M get a 555-horsepower, 4.4-liter, twin-turbocharged V-8.

Unfortunately, the federal government's fuel mileage rating for each of these new M models is a dismal 12 mpg in the city and 17 mpg on the highway.

Lastly, all 7-Series sedans get an eight-gear automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive becomes available. The 12-cylinder engine in the top-of-the-line 7-Series is a new, 544-horsepower, 6-liter, twin-turbocharged powerplant.

BUICK

The Buick LaCrosse sedan is restyled and during the model year will add a new, more fuel-efficient base engine that's a 2.4-liter, direct-injection, Ecotec powerplant generating 182 horsepower. Officials say the four-cylinder engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission will boost the LaCrosse's fuel mileage rating to 20 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway, one of the best for the segment. The move marks the first time the LaCrosse has a four banger under the hood. Other LaCrosse engines are V-6s.

Buick also updates all Lucerne sedan models with fog lamps and new rocker panels.

CADILLAC

The nation's largest automaker, General Motors, decided to shed some of its car brands as it emerged from bankruptcy in July. But GM held tight to its luxury brand Cadillac.

For 2010, Cadillac adds a first-ever station wagon to its entry model, the CTS. Called the CTS Sport Wagon, it has already been selling in Europe. In the States, it's offered with a choice of 3-liter, direct injection V-6 capable of delivering 270 horsepower or 3.6-liter, direct injection V-6 generating 304 horsepower.

A power liftgate is standard, the interior is like that of the CTS sedans, and buyers of the Sport Wagon choose from among three suspension settings. The Sport Wagon also is available with all-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive.

Starting retail price is $40,655.

Cadillac's SRX crossover SUV is the other big news at the start of the 2010 model year.

The mid-size SRX is redone and rides on a new, improved chassis. Styling is updated, and buyers choose from among two, relatively small displacement engines — for Cadillac. The 2.8-liter, turbocharged V-6 capable of producing 300 horses will arrive around the middle of the model year. In the meantime, the SRX is being sold with the standard, 265-horsepower, 3-liter, direct injection V-6. Both engines are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.

The five-passenger SRX has a starting retail price of $34,155.

Elsewhere at Cadillac, the Escalade large SUV offers improved fuel mileage from its 6.2-liter V-8, thanks to the addition of Active Fuel Management technology. The software automatically turns off some engine cylinders when they're not needed, thus saving on gasoline.

The Escalade gas-electric hybrid models this year get a new, 3.08 axle ratio that improves fuel economy.

CHEVROLET

Chevy's big looker for 2010 is already out. The revived, rear-wheel-drive Camaro coupe debuted in summer and boasts V-6 as well as V-8 engines, a distinctive, low-slung styling and surprisingly decent gasoline mileage.

Indeed, the Camaro's federal government highway mileage rating is 29 mpg when the car is fitted with the base, 3.6-liter V-6 that generates a healthy 304 horsepower.

The uplevel engine is a 426-horsepower, 6.2-liter V-8, and both manual and automatic transmissions are available.

The 2010 four-seat Camaro, the first new Camaro in seven years, has a starting retail price of just over $23,000.

Chevy revised its Equinox crossover SUV for 2010, giving it distinctive styling that borrows from the Chevrolet Malibu and Traverse. Inside, there are new standard and optional features, including a 40-gigabyte hard drive to store music.

And there are two new Equinox engines: The 182-horsepower, 2.4-liter, direct fuel-injection, Ecotec four cylinder that's also being put in the Buick LaCrosse and a new 3-liter, direct injection V-6. The only transmissions are six-speed automatics.

Best of all, the Equinox with four-cylinder engine becomes the base model with a lower starting retail price — $23,185 — than the lowest-priced Equinox of the 2009 model year, which started at more than $25,000. Last year's Equinoxes had V-6s only.

The four cylinder also improves the Equinox gas mileage ratings — to a high of 22 mpg in city driving and 32 mpg on the highway for two-wheel drive models.

Chevy's mid-size pickup truck, the Colorado, will be available with a V-8 for the first time. The Colorado's 5.3-liter V-8 produces 300 horsepower, which far surpasses the 185 horses of its four-cylinder engine and the 242 horses of its five-cylinder engine.

This V-8 is available only on the Colorado's crew cab models. But all Colorados add head curtain air bags as standard equipment this year.

The 5.3-liter V-8 already is offered in the Silverado full-size pickup truck, and for 2010, a fuel saver mode and 3.08 axle ratio are standard, too, as Chevy makes engine adjustments to boost fuel economy.

Also this year at Chevrolet, side air bags become standard on all Corvettes, and all 'Vettes with manual transmission get standard launch control.

The 1.6-liter, Ecotec, four-cylinder engine remains in the Aveo lineup, but horsepower is bumped to 108 from 106. At least the starting retail price hasn't changed from the 2009 model. It's still $12,685, including destination charge.

The 6-liter, Vortec V-8 in the Chevy Suburbans adds variable valve timing, which improves responsiveness and efficiency.

The mid-size Chevy Trailblazer SUV is discontinued.

A final note: The Volt plug-in gas-electric hybrid car, frequently in the news, is more than a year away from showrooms.

CHRYSLER

Now owned by Italian car company Fiat, the Chrysler brand is keeping its retro-styled, five-passenger PT Cruiser for a while longer.

The news this past summer reversed a January decision to stop production of the smallest car wearing a Chrysler badge. But note that the reversal does not affect the PT Cruiser Convertible, which was dropped in the 2008 model year.

Elsewhere for 2010, the exterior is freshened slightly on both the Sebring coupe and convertible, while the Chrysler 300C adds standard key-free ignition and rear park assist system.

And all models of the Town & Country minivan add anti-whiplash front head restraints.

The Aspen full-size SUV is no longer offered.

DODGE

America's Dodge brand also got a new, Italian owner — Fiat — this year. And while things get sorted out by the new owner regarding future product plans, Dodge has scheduled the introduction of new crew cab models of the Ram heavy-duty pickup truck.

Engine choices for the 2500/3500 Rams include a 350-horsepower 6.7-liter, Cummins Turbo Diesel six cylinder that meets air emission standards in all 50 states and delivers 650 foot-pound of torque.

The trucks' suspension also is retuned for a better ride and better load handling.

In other news, the gross combined weight rating for the light-duty Dodge Ram 1500 is boosted to 15,500 pounds this year when the truck is fitted with 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 and 3.92 rear axle ratio on the 140.5-inch wheelbase model.

The Dodge Caliber gets a new interior for 2010, and suspension is improved for better ride and handling in the Dakota pickup.

In addition, the Grand Caravan minivan, Nitro SUV and Journey crossover SUV add front-seat anti-whiplash head restraints for 2010.

The Durango SUV is discontinued.

FERRARI

As if the 599GTB Fiorano isn't hot enough, Ferrari offers a $30,095 option package that makes it even hotter.

The Handling Gran Turismo Evoluzione package adds carbon fiber to the interior, fancy wheels, retuned exhaust, stiffer springs and different shock absorbers.

Of course, you have to buy the car first, and its starting retail price is more than $300,000.

FORD

The Ford Taurus family sedan is bigger and restyled this model year, and the high-performance Taurus SHO — now with a 365-horsepower, 3.5-liter, twin-turbocharged, EcoBoost gasoline V-6 rather than a V-8 — returns to the lineup.

Ford kept the starting retail price for the Taurus steady at $25,995, even while adding space and comfort to the four-door car for this model year.

The standard engine is a 263-horsepower, 3.5-liter, Duratec V-6, and there's a long list of available high-tech features including cruise control that uses radar to automatically slow the Taurus on the highway if it's closing on a vehicle ahead too quickly.

There's also a MyKey feature that lets parents restrict or set warnings on some activities when teens are behind the wheel. For example, MyKey can limit radio volume and activate speed warning alerts.

Also this year, the Ford Fusion is restyled and updated. The result is a mid-size sedan with attractive looks, an improved interior and a more powerful four-cylinder engine than before.

The base, 2.5-liter four banger cranks out 175 horses, and if that's not enough, a 263-horsepower, 3-liter V-6 is available for the Fusion.

Fusion also adds a gas-electric hybrid model for 2010, and its gas mileage rating of 41/36 mpg from the federal government is noteworthy because it puts the Fusion Hybrid and its sibling Mercury Milan Hybrid sedans at the top of mid-size sedans in fuel mileage in the country.

Starting retail prices are $20,345 for the gasoline-only Fusion and $28,350 for the hybrid.

Another new model in 2010 is the F-150 SVT Raptor full-size pickup truck. It's a high-performance, off-road truck with a 310-horsepower, 5.4-liter V-8 and later, an even more powerful 6.2-liter V-8. The inspiration for the sporty Raptor comes from desert race trucks.

Small business owners or anyone with an offbeat taste in vehicles will want to check out the 2010 Ford Transit Connect. It looks like a delivery van, but it's a much smaller, handier size.

The Transit Connect is powered by a fuel-thrifty, 136-horsepower, 2-liter four cylinder and starts at $21,475, including destination charge.

Ford's well-known Mustang is freshened for 2010 with mild upgrades, inside and out. Suspension is revised a bit as well.

The Mustang GT's 4.6-liter V-8 adds 15 more horses, for a total of 315 horsepower.

The styling updates to the regular, 2010 Mustangs carry through to the high-performance Shelby GT500, where horsepower from the 5.4-liter V-8 now peaks at 540 and torque climbs to 510 foot-pounds. Suspension and clutch also are revised.

The 2010 Edge gets engine refinements that improve fuel mileage, while the 2010 Escape can be had with an electronic system that parallel parks the car by itself with a touch of a button.

Trailer Sway Control is added as standard equipment on Ford's Explorer, Explorer Sport Trac and Expedition SUVs this year to help keep trailers being towed behind the vehicles stable.

The Flex crossover SUV, meantime, adds the availability of a 355-horsepower, 3.5-liter, twin-turbocharged, EcoBoost V-6 and a six-speed automatic transmission.

Ford's smallest car, the Focus, gets standard electronic stability control, traction control and antilock brakes on all models.

'For small cars, India is the centre of the universe'

it small cars, medium sized cars or large ones. We have always been very competitive. In the US, we chose to focus on larger vehicles, SUVs and trucks. That is what the customers wanted here. Fuel prices here are low, geographical area is big and people have different hobbies.

But the reason we did not so much focus on cars in the US was that our cost structure here was not competitive. It was just not profitable to make cars in the US. So, we focused elsewhere on world class cars. We went to our Union partners and said if we reduce our cost structures we can even make cars in the US and provide jobs.

We now have a path breaking agreement with United Auto Workers, which has brought down the labour cost from $75 (around Rs 3,600) per hour to less than $50 (Rs 2,400). Our legacy costs have been capped. Couple of months ago, we announced that we are converting a truck plant to a car plant right here in the US.

Your sense of timing appears perfect. You raised money before the financial markets went kaput and sold Land Rover and Jaguar just weeks before global markets collapsed. Coming from Boeing, I have been through these big cycles worldwide be it bird flu, SARS or the economic crisis in Asia and how that disrupted economic development and travel. When I saw this slowdown, the feeling inside me was I have been there and have experienced it.

In such circumstances, the most important thing is to move decisively to reduce your capability to the real demand. If you don't, you just start burning cash and you are out of business. The second thing is during the toughest of the times when you are restructuring to the low demand you accelerate your investment in new products. That's how Boeing's 767/777/787 came about. When the cycle turns around and the economy revives, you are there with the best products in the world.

Ford's plan is very similar. We wanted to restructure and that costs money. We also wanted to accelerate new product development. We went to the market, pledged our assets and borrowed $23.5 billion (Rs 1, 12,800 crore). We are making our investments and the products are coming on line. We have already paid back $10.1 billion (Rs 48,480 crore) of the debt.

Do you think Ford will have enough cash to ride out this downturn and not touch the $9 billion (Rs 43,200 crore) federal line of credit? Absolutely. We have told the US government that we will not need any bridge loans from them. After we borrowed money in 2006, we have made a lot of improvements on productivity and quality so we even have a cushion in case the world slows down further. We are in good shape.

The world is gravitating towards small cars... The US is very unique in that it likes bigger vehicles. Most areas around the world do not have the mass and the openness, the low fuel prices and interest rates that the US has had. But the future of the automobile is going to be in the small cars worldwide with higher quality and more features.

It is not going to be small is cheap but small is beautiful and high quality. If you look at the entire world, 60 per cent of all the vehicles globally will be relatively of a smaller size, about 25 per cent will be medium size and 15 per cent will be large cars. We will be world class in every segment and market.

Ford is investing over $2 billion (Rs 9,600 crore) in emerging markets such as India, China, South Africa and Thailand... To me, it is very clear that if Ford is to be an industry leader, we absolutely need to serve all the major markets around the world. Going forward, a third of the global market will be Americas, about a third will be Europe, Africa and Russia and a third will be Asia-Pacific led by India and China. It makes sense to start with India and China and use all your global resources so that you can bring the very best values to the customers in these markets.

Finally, a small car for India... That is the biggest challenge and biggest opportunity. As I said, if the whole world is going to be 60 per cent small cars, the solution for India making a wonderful high quality small car and making it efficiently will be the foundation for rest of the world. For small cars, India is the centre of the universe.

Ford and Hyundai entered India in 1996. The Korean car major has already made India its global small car hub. Do you think Ford has been slow off the block? We had to deal with areas that needed attention. As the US slowed down, we did not have all the vehicles that we needed here. We also needed to get profitable and this is where we made our big investment. You will see an accelerated development of the Indian business. We are investing $500 million (Rs 2,400 crore) in India to launch a small car, double our capacity from one lakh to two lakh units,
